Dunno how to create massive, thick chunk groove ala Muzzaik???

I'm wondering if anyone has any insight as to the techniques used to get those thick, stomping drum tracks. Muzzaik being one of my favorite, or something along the lines of Rene Amesz or Peter Gelderblom.

Does this all lie in the Kicks and some techniques/effects applied there, or is it just the layering of different drums all together that generate this massive wall of sound.

On a secondary note, how do you go about getting your drum tracks not to sound so stagnant. I seem to always end up with a straightforward, boring straight 4x4 kick drum beat with no life, which in turn makes my tracks sound like shitty techno. Not sure if its a matter of the programming and kick placement, or more compression and gating in order to get more life and bounce in to those beats.

your thoughts.....

well i can help you with the second point for good drums at least needs a good groove so many people rule out that ear to hand way of making things.

just find a sound you like first like bongos open piano roll loop over a bar or two and find a pattern you like the most.

and build the rest of the drums around it

I generally burn it to CD and soak the CD in Old El Paso Thick 'N Chunky Salsa for about 8 hours. If it's still not chunky enough then I'll toss some slivered almonds into the mix.

And as for making drum tracks that aren't boring and stagnant, the solution is to, um, not make boring and stagnant drum tracks. Put some creativity into it and don't just copy/paste 50 times. Seriously, are there people out there who think that adding a compressor is going to make a lousy drum track sound good?
