Car shopping...need help

ok so im getting a new car pretty soon like within the next couple of months..i really like the idea of leasing because u trade it in every few years for the newer model or whatever it is u want and ur montly payments are cheaper. but a lot of people are saying that's dumb and a waste of money...i can see that but i dont plan on putting like a bunch of money down on it..THAT would be wasting money imo...throwing 2 g's down for the down payment and in the end it's not urs! anyway my price range is anything from like 12k to 19k. i have pretty much decided on the 2002 civic coupe...i want the EX but i'll probably have to go with LX. does anyone have a civic?? what's ur take on them? also some other cars that would fit in the same catagory (i think) are like the new toyota corolla and the dodge neon. i know there are other cars that are the same price range but i really dont want high insurance payments. anyway any opinions/advice would be greatly appreciated thanks..

out of the choices you listed, i think civic id your best bet. imo, the only situation where leasing is worthwhile, is if you lease a car with low depreciation (like an import) and have the money to buy it out at the end of the term and re-sell it.

have you thought about a bit older vw gti? hmmmmm, thalk to robby

If you do your math you generally find that after payments and what not, buying a car and selling it after three years is cheaper then leasing a car and returning it.

Anyway, if you're willing to pay $19k you should go for one of the new sporty hatchbacks. Maybe the new Focus SVT (although there's only 7500 of 'em) or a Civic Si (I think they're selling 15000 of those) or maybe a Golf 1.8T (turbo so good) or the new Nissan Sentra SE-R (has Skyline Style wheels and craploads of torque). Consider these only if you're willing to spend $19k.

Otherwise go for the standard editions of the above mentioned cars. If it were up to me I'd go with the Focus but then again I'm a big World Rally fan!!!

Slylee,

If I may offer some advice.
I was in car sales for 3 years, and have family members in the business.

According to www.edmunds.com, the invoice price for a 2002 Civic Ex with side airbags and automatic transmission is $16,508. Now this is with no added options, check their website for standard features.
Honda is also offering 2.9% interest rate for 24-36 months and 4.9% for 37-60 months. Again the special interest rates is on approved credit. Check with your dealer to see if they are doing the special finance rates, which they should do.

So here is my advice. Go to your local Honda dealer and head straight to the "fleet sales department." The fleet salesperson job is to move units for the dealership, not make a profit. Find a Civic you like, make sure to test drive, and with the options you want. Sit down with the person, ask to see the invoice. When you see the invoice offer him a fair amount, I would say fair is $200 over invoice. Thats $200+dealer cost which you should see on the invoice. Then with that price you will get a great deal and good payments.

Using a finance calculator (*I do not take any responsibility for whatever payments you might end up paying ) with a base price of $16,725, 8% sales tax here in CA (I don't know what the tax is in FL) and $0 down your payments for 60 months at 4.9% (if you qualify) is $344.76. With $2000 down your payments will be $307.11.

The Civic also has the best resale value in its class. So thats
another factor for financing.

Let me know if I can be of any more help,
Emil
