Creating a full, DJ-friendly track from a rip

I've always enjoyed experimenting with this. I have many tracks from older compilation that never saw anything past a DAT to my knowledge and of course there is always those elusive set rips you can get hooked on sometimes.

My question is how would you (or do you) go about slicing up the track and making it an actual usable song for a mix? I've done the obvious and cut ends and pasted them.

What about bringing in new elements, or filtering down those build up clips so you can bring the mix in and out more gently (since those cuts are usually fully progressed)

Suggestions, ideas, etc. Bring it !
