Toronto's Electronic Music Scene
October 10 marked the ten year anniversary of the unfortunate death Allen Ho, a 21-year-old Ryerson student that collapsed at a Hullabaloo rave event after ingesting ecstasy. The inquest into Ho's untimely death triggered uproar from Torontonians seeking new measures of control and prohibition for the rave scene. Brainchild of Chris Frolic (AKA DJ Anabolic Frolic), the Hullabaloo event series was retired in July of 2005 after eight years of throwing underground parties featuring eardrum-rattling, 150bpm+ trance and hardcore.
Extended Play, the column penned by freelance electronic music enthusiast Denise Benson for Eye Weekly, has seen its last day. In her final and understandably nostalgic edition of Extended Play, Benson reflects on Toronto's club history, as well as both local and international club culture trends. I strongly suspect this won't be the last set of recommendations we hear from one of the most ardent electronic music supporters in the city.
Ironic considering Elio Iannacci's recent Globe & Mail article claiming that Toronto has been crowned "Canada's new electronic music capital," with burgeoning artists such as Candy Coated Killahz, Thunderheist and Fritz Helder & the Phantoms helping to reshape the urban dance scene.
