Exclamation Download Microsoft Security Essentials - Free anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Microsoft Security Essentials, independently certified by West Coast Labs, is backed by the company's global security response team and is built on the same award-winning core security technology found in the company's security solutions for businesses. It requires no registration, trials or renewals.

Making Microsoft Security Essentials broadly available as a free consumer download for genuine Windows-based PCs is part of Microsoft's ongoing commitment to provide a more trustworthy computing experience for all customers.

Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to run quietly in the background alerting users only when there is an action for them to take. It also limits CPU and memory usage, resulting in less impact on the tasks consumers perform every day such as opening documents or browser windows or loading search results, even on older or less powerful PCs. Microsoft Security Essentials uses real-time protection to help prevent PCs from becoming infected, and it is the first Microsoft security product to make use of the company's new Dynamic Signature Service, a technology that helps ensure users stay protected by the most current virus definitions available without having to wait for the next scheduled download.

-----------

Great product (been using it for a while as a beta tester)!

Finally no more subscription fees for this type of software or service - it is about time (bye bye expensive NOD32, Norton, McAffe).

Finally, I've been without an AV since windows defender kept wanting updates...and another one I've been using expired password wise.

Honestly, how is it resources?

That is the number one problem with most anti-whatevers, and why I usually stay away. I have been using Symantec Anti-virus corporate edition since 2002, and its been amazing, catches everything and uses next to zero resources.

While doing a scan, its taking 40-50% of a core2duo @ 2ghz, and using about 45MB of memory.

While running in the background its taking anywhere between 2-8% of the CPU and 41MB or memory.

HOLY SHIT. if you open explorer, and load files, or open a new program it jumps as high as 50% scanning the new items, but quickly jumps back down to 0-2%. If you are going through a lot of files, and often, that could be a considerable amount of cpu being used.

I'll use it for a week, and see how it goes.

Having used the beta for a month or so, I was really surprised at the memory footprint and occasional CPU usage - I updated to the release version today and will run it for another month or so to see how it goes.

Free reliable security though, you really can't argue.

I'll keep using the free version of Avast.

But seriously if you're worried about an AV program using too many resources these days you should probably upgrade from that Pentium II with 64MB RAM

That is way less than any other resident security scanner.

HOLY SHIT is right, it is a good product.

WTF!

I am getting the standard error code 0x80070643 unable to install.

I made sure the windows installer service is running, but no dice.

Any advice?

Love how Windows comes out with this right before Windows 7. Speaks volumes about how confident they are about their new product. On a related note, did anyone see the videos for these Windows 7 parties * ∞
