Theories on why so few women follow EDM?

Watcha got. I rememeber reading one time that men heavily preferred "instrumental" music in a study versus vocal music.

I believe another factor is if you're into EDM djing/producing/business (which is about 99% of EDM listeners now) you are without a doubt a confident person. I hate to generalize but women seem so insecure. Maybe that's another reason?

Regardless of it all, we need more hot b!tches listening to our music. We've got way too many chiefs and not enough female indians.

What do you guys think the problem is?

I can tell you that all those retards that add sexist lyrics to their tracks like " fuck da dj " or something similar doesn't help your cause.

lol... must I really begin to mention all the hotties listening to edm? They're not few, I can tell you that much.. There's not many women in this particular forum, but that doesn't mirror the general interest.

Yea.. sry for sounding so aggressive (if i did at all lol)... but.. I guess in my mind the problem brought up doesn't exist. I can see it potentially being different overseas though.

In my experience most (American) girls do not like instrumental music as much. Even my gf, who pretty much hates dance music, can stand tracks better if they have vocals.

I think there are fewer female producers because girls are generally not encouraged to get acquainted with electronics in any depth. Yeah they will use the net, iTunes, Facebook, instant messaging, but I think it is still seen as a bit weird and nerdy for them to go much deeper than that with technology.

the only place you can really hear good music in alot of places is gay clubs. So although I think djstephenwiley's thread sort of retarded and somewhat sexist , there is some truth in the female demography not being represented that well.

As to why it might be different overseas.. well I think you might be onto something yourself.. since EDM is not as popular in the US as R&B and hiphop.. you have to be more confident, unmindful and "different" to listen to it.

Agreed, as this doesn't only account for EDM, but all sound engineers and producers in general.

Most of the 'popular' culture over here likes Hip Hop and R&B. Electronic music is only a small segment of the population, and trance is an even smaller percentage of that. Heck, after the big club I worked at closed down, we didn't have another dance club open for 5 years.

Also someone else mentioned, the lack of vocals is probably a factor too. I tried getting some of my female friends interested in trance but they would say, "Oh techno..."
