Can people who have Pioneer gear use it together with Ableton?

Just wondering but I know there alot of DJ's out there who have Pioneer gear like there mixers and the CDJ's which are all considered standard in clubs.

Now, can those people also use that Pioneer gear (both mixer and cdj tables) together with the now very popular Ableton software.. if so, how are those used together?

Am I correct that most of Pioneer mixers can be used as midi controllers for Ableton?

And what about the CDJ turntables.. can those be used somehow together with Ableton or has Ableton itself actually replaced them?

Also, I noticed in vids that Tiesto and ATB still use CD disks.. they always have a map filled with CD disks.. does that mean they still use CDJ's and not laptops with software like Ableton? However.. i also have seen them using laptops.. how do they use a laptop if they still seem to use CD's??

Like, watch this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p2EiMfA670 Tiesto uses Pioneers and also grabs a CD at some point.. however in this one no laptop.. does that mean that guys like Tiesto don't use stuff like laptops and Ableton so that you have to choose between either using CDJ's or going Ableton?!

the djm 7/800 have midi capabilities so you can use them in conjunction with ableton. your interface should have a midi in though since the djm uses a standard midi cable. if you want to use the djm as the master and ableton as a slave, you will have to setup ableton's track delay in order compensate for the delay in midi clock.

i actually used to run serato and ableton from my djm 700 but got tired of how crappy the midi clock was. granted i used techs but i was always on ableton's nudge feature. i'm sure cdjs will be more stable when dealing with bpm.

in the end, i just got rid of the techs and am soley using ableton. just easier and less headache on my part.

You don't have to use midi with Abelton - I actually prefer not to. I route my Ableton channels in as pure audio into the mixer from my audio interface, so the mixer sees the same signal as a cdj. That way the setup it 300x less intense, I can use all the crazy effects on the mixer, and I know my setup will also work on any mixer out there.

Why not use a midi controller like the APC 40 and do all your mixing and fx in the box?

I don't separate the channels with my set-up, I just run one master from my soundcard into a channel on my mixer(DJM400). I also use a VCM600 so that takes care of the channels I'm running in ableton, I just cue on the pioneer. Simple and works for me. I'm also just running my techs into the DJM400 also. The only problem I have at the moment is that I can't mix 2 records and use ableton at the same time as it's only a 2 channel mixer. I suppose that sux a bit but it really doesn't bother me too much as I rarely mix like that anyway.

One word - space A huge midi controller works great in the bedroom but I've found that unless you're the headliner at a club, you're lucky to be able to fit your cd case somewhere let alone setup a separate controller. For this reason I prefer to keep my setup as compact and tight as I can, so I can setup anywhere quickly with as little space as possible.
