ive been interested in reaktor 5 for awhile now, but dont really know whats it all about, i know that its main purpose is for creating and programming your own sounds i heard its great for sound designers alike, me im just a beatmaker trying to soak up as much knowledge as i can of this every growing world of music production, i know creating my own sounds is defitnely something i want to do because dont really wanne rely on presets even though you can tweak em to get what you want. so what im asking is reaktor a good tool to have in the studio? and what else does it do? ive read about it, but i wanne hear some opinions from you guys.

For me its one of the best tools around, if not the best simply due to its unlimited possibilities.

sure you can just use its 100`s of synths but why limit yourself to that. It also has beat mangler's, samplers, effects, processors, free flowing sound creation tools etc. etc. etc.

You can build whatever you like in it also BUT that's where people freak though as they see that and think its too complicated.

I am currently making a synthesis course which features Reaktor heavily.

can it run on its own? to for example make it a liveact somehow? not entirely happy with ableton really and wants to have something that i can customize a little. been a little curious on reaktor for a long time but havent really bother checking up on it.

Life's too short.

Saying that there's a ton of free stuff for it so might be worth a look for me again.

Ive been playing with it reaktor that is for some time now.
And its a good pice of kit.

The thing i have learnd is that sound design takes a lot of time and work and unless you want to only make sounds witch i have for well over a year now.

you will be better of just pratticing making tracks first as for the last year or so ive made fuck all tunes but now know how to get most sounds that i want from my set up.

It's up to you to decide on whats more important to you now in music producthion.

personly i think the both go hand in hand.

yeah one of the reasons i was intreasted in reacktor was because i make my shit in real time and using it as a second host to keep things in one area.

you can use it as a stand alone and make all the parts and sounds you need only you still need something to lay down your stuff on to.

i think you will get away using it for live perposes to palm.

To make a long story short, Reaktor is a meta-synthesizer. It is essentially a tool for you to design your own custom synthesizers, using certain building blocks common in most synthesizers (oscillators, modulators, samplers, etc.).

I have reaktor and although I love the concept, its a real pain to get it working right. My main interest in it is as a sound mangler, so mainly chopping beats up ala MLR/vectory and stuff like that. Secondarily, I like it for the granularisation effects, and its great at that too.

Unfortunately, its got so much latency, that when you use it with Live, the beats go out of time, and its impossible to get them back in because of the way that Live offsets instrument's output. As such, its impossible to use as a real time instrument. The only real option is to use it as a standalone and reimport your stuff back in. This fucks up your workflow and makes it impossible to use live.

worse, getting samples into reaktor is a nuisance of the highest order. you have to save them and then reimport them, its just not really very fluid. This also fucks up your workflow.

I only use it for the pre built stuff and that's fine, but its an old system, may not get an update, and its frankly quite clunky.

If you're interested in this sort of stuff and running ableton, I really think the more obvious option is Max4Live, which was out yesterday and probably outclasses Reaktor in most ways.

And yeah, it will kill your CPU.
