I don't normally post videos, but I thought this short one gives a fascinating look at how resource development is in part shaped by political agreements that reflect the distribution of power between the US and Canada:
I'm not against shale oil in theory, but proponents of this process do seriously underestimate both the cost and the environmental impact, as well as the externalities involved in the NAFTA agreement.
