I don't have a debate to start necessarily, but I just wanted to share this lecture. This is more or less my field of study, but I feel like this video completely changed the way I think about some of the issues related to the development track record in global public health.
And does anybody know what software he is using for that presentation, by any chance? I think that blew me away as much as the data that he was using.

Awesome find, mate. I may be a bit biased because it does already fit my world view (I come from a supposed "developing country" and I don't really think my situation is much different from yours, though I'm certainly way better off than some of my fellow countrymen... and quite a few Americans), but his use of the data is very interesting and enlightening.

It seemed at first to be just a flash presentation specially crafted for the occasion, as it even says "Macromedia Flash Player" in the taskbar. I then thought he could've used a program other than MF to make it, so I decided to go to his website and... here's the answer.
What can't Google do!?

Well, it wasn't so much the fact that other countries are on par with the US in life expectancy, infant mortality, etc. - it was just the enormity of the shift. Especially in SE Asia and the Middle East - since the 1960's there's been a truly phenomenal positive change that isn't really captured in the theoretical literature on development.

Awesome! And you don't even have to pay to use it! Thank goodness for Google.

So how did it change your thinking lez? Are you more of a capitalist now, given that life expectancy increases dramatically with increased wealth?

Health indicators drive economic growth, and they always have.
