yeps the buzz tracker is absolutely free, and it's very good. Furthermore there's protools free, the free downgraded version (buggy!) of the most expensive studio program.

u can find lots of questions about free software AND where 2 get cracked software (reason, fruityloops ed.)

Go to http://www.modplug.com
and downlaod your self the Starter's kit.
I think you should start where most of all producers started: with a Tracker program. Buzz tracker is also good.

true, i started out couple years ago as a tracking scene spectator too. still remember the days when tracking musicians had to rip samples off songs by others
