Yes, I know this thread could be better suited to the production studio, but I'm afraid to ask anything there as it's a scary place! And I mostly want DJs input on this one anyway as I'm no producer (I couldn't produce a track even if my life depended on it).

But I would really like to do some simple re-edits of many tracks that I have. Mostly rearranging bits of them, removing some parts, mashing together stuff from 2 or more different tracks, changing and matching tempo (time stretching), sample precise looping, stuff like that.

Some of the stuff I want to re-edit is recorded from vinyl, so the tempo isn't constant like on 100% digital files. Therefore good beat detection would be really helpful too. Something that could help me line up the stuff 100% precise even though the tempo isn't 100% precise. I dunno if either of these programs have that.

So far I've done all my re-edits with a basic wave editor, like Audacity or Sound Studio now on OS X, but it's mostly rather fucking tedious work and takes ages to do even some simple stuff. So I'm looking for something easier and more versatile.

I've thought about Logic Studio and Ableton Live. I guess Ableton would suit my needs nicely, but I've tested it out about a year or so ago and I couldn't understand how it worked, at all. So now I'm thinking if maybe Logic would suit me better for what I want to do or some other app that works on OS X and is versatile and easy/simple/fast to use.

It's probably very hard for anyone to actually know exactly what I want from the program (I don't even know that 100% myself), but what I really would like to know is how well suited are these programs for re-editing stuff (more than simple looping really), but not really producing any new sounds and what alternatives there are that I haven't discovered yet.

I hope that made some sense (kinda tired and feeling somewhat weird atm)

Ableton Live would be far better for this use than Logic, and you have the added benefit of then being able to use Abelton while DJing too. Hell, you could do remixes and edits on the fly while you play.

Ableton Live:
Once you have the track warped, its damn easy to just copy and paste sections where you want them. Make sure you use Re-Pitch warp mode on HQ and the same tempo though or you might start to see quality loss.

Definitely Ableton Live. It was designed for exactly this type of thing.

Apparently Traktor is getting good at this too, at least according to a few DJ friends. I can't speak from personal experience on that one though.
