According to Toronto Planning Committee: congestion a sign of prosperity?!?!?!?

Yup, these are the folks who plan our city!!! A couple of juicy quotes here include:

"There are a lot of places where no one wants to be (such as) bombed-out U.S. cities. People want to be in Toronto and that is a good thing and I don't view congestion as a problem,"

and

"The transit problem may solve itself. Oil will start to get scarce or too expensive. When people feel it in their pocket book they look for alternative measures to get around............Since the cost of getting around in cars will skyrocket, the marketplace will solve the problem."

Remember.... these are the people we have elected and are hired to plan this city. What the hell are they smoking? I really really fear for our city if this is the best we can get!!

Congestion has doubled in just three years

By KEVIN CONNOR, TORONTO SUN

Last Updated: 7th January 2010, 3:54am

If you think it's taking longer to drive to and from work, you're not alone.

Congestion has become twice as bad on some stretches of the 400-series highways over the past three years, according to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation travel time report for 2008.

The Canadian Automobile Association, which has been calling on all levels of government to address the congestion, isn't surprised.

"Outstanding infrastructure needs to be completed. It is proper transportation planning. We have had an increase in population and we are expecting more," spokesman Faye Lyons said.

But traffic congestion is a measure of success, said Councillor Gord Perks, who sits on Toronto's planning committee.

"There are a lot of places where no one wants to be (such as) bombed-out U.S. cities. People want to be in Toronto and that is a good thing and I don't view congestion as a problem," he said.

"Access, not speed, creates a community. We have services and people don't need to drive. In the suburbs people have good access to services."

Councillor Norm Kelly, chairman of the committee, says the city is doing its part in investing in rapid transit to help with speedier commutes.

"A hot topic is road tolls, but I'm not sure how that would play out. The transit problem may solve itself. Oil will start to get scarce or too expensive. When people feel it in their pocket book they look for alternative measures to get around," Kelly said.

"Since the cost of getting around in cars will skyrocket, the marketplace will solve the problem."

Councillor Peter Milczyn, also on the planning committee, says he hasn't seen more congestion in the city.

"I live in Etobicoke. If you go to the suburbs there is more congestion. Public transit needs to play a role so we can free up road space for commercial vehicles," he said.

on the bright side in these morons' eyes... at this rate toronto will become one of those "bombed out US cities" since it will be too frustrating to get anywhere. Use transit? Im pretty sure that if even a quarter of all drivers today got out of their cars tomorrow the transit system would break down. We have 5 million people and a transit system for a million at best. And Quebec City has a better freeway system than us FFS!!

These fucking simple minded loose goose necks are clueless. Some time ago, the person that mastered a plan to create highways lacked vision and perspective but that's not new. 401 should of been implemented 5 passenger lanes in both directions. Seem's like a lot in the beginning however with time it possesses the advantages. That time is now.
Things haven't been changed much however the American's understood the concept. Any forms of transportation were to be settled in the beginning thus creating cities there after. The highways are wide, I think the widest I've ever seen was on interstate 95 before NYC, around 16 lanes. I can be at fault, was a kid at the time but it captured an image in my head till this day. In Canada, it's all backward's
"Road tolls is a hot topic but I'm not sure how that would play out." Ummm, what the fuck do you know then? That's right, pay more so you can produce one extra line and on top of that maybe a HOV, 2 or more passengers only? How will you actually expand 401 now since you are facing a serious obstacle such as standing architecture? No, you will decimate structures, take out peoples homes & businesses? Idiots.
407 has perspective & prospect. Both directions have been seperated by 50 metres or more and the highway for the most part is already 4 good lanes, five lanes at most. The company has even bought out land on the sides to conserve the future. The civil engineer was intelligent, it's a excellent highway and very sad that kind of mentality was not on the front 25 years ago.
It's the same old story with these politicians. Lot's of talking, emphasizing on promises that are never achieved, choke down high taxes from citizens so these dickless kunts can have a nice golf game, spectacular vacations and above all vision a vast country in the world a laughing stock.

Speaking of Toronto potential prosperity -
An initiative to make Toronto more walkable - they going to start closing streets to traffic in downtown Toronto and make them pedestrian only...
For those who are in any way associated with UofT - St. George will soon be a walk-only zone...

If they measure prosperity by car congestion - downtown in soon to become much more prosperous...

Wonderful idea! Hell why not just close down every street and only allow horse and buggies? Perhaps we should direct the university to teach that the world is flat and mandate studying by candle light?

Unreal what these yo yos come up with. If i didnt know any better id say they are intent on WRECKING the city instead of helping it.
