I have 2gb I will get 2 more then tommorow. (thats all I have room for on the mobo) but RAM is memory that will effect speed too is what you're saying?
I thought it was just the processor.

And I use about 8-10 synths, thats before I even get to around bar 41 for the break my computer usually is already starting to max out. And I try to finish the rest of the track just using those synths it sucks.
I do A LOT of automations though, a lot of things moving, a lot of equalizers, a lot of delays, very few reverbs, very few compressors, occassional chorus, phasers, flangers, etc. Right now though I use very little samples so I only use 1/4 ram at most. All though when/if I reinstall Nexus and Hypersonic I may certaintly use it.

I notice when I use the Virus its best to only use the virus.

For some reason even when the levels are right, and the pitch is right, and the timing is right, it doesn't sound right when mixed with vsts. Its real hard for me to explain but virus mixes fine with the virus, with vsts its difficult for it to not sound "off" somehow.

I upgraded from a Core 2 to an i7 920 and bought 4 gigs of ram and it did the trick!

More RAM is probably a good idea but won't really effect the speed of a project THAT much unless you use a lot of samples and audio files. It'll certainly help though.

VST are almost completely reliant on CPU power.

What CPU and motherboard do you have at the moment? It's a good idea to check the model number of the motherboard to see what CPUs are supported.

3-4 reverbs in one project is enough to slow things down a bit, especially something like Redline. Which ones are you using? I tend to use just two reverbs per project now, a long tail and a short tail and put them on sends. This way you don't need to insert that many.

A DAW EQ probably won't use that much CPU power but if you start adding a 3rd party one on each track it'll add up.

Some VST synths are more CPU hungry than others too. I rencently bought Synthsquad and one complex pad preset had my CPU meter up at 30% Crazy tbh. Massive takes a lot of power to use if it's in Ultra mode too.

Another idea would be to look for a used Powercore Firewire. I just bought one here for £350 and it has all the FX you need in the included bundle too. Most of them are very good too. It'll take a large chunk of the processing off your CPU.

I'm not sure if FL can make proper use of that chip, I'll have to read to find out. But that actually looks like a perfect recommendation, people are saying they noticed a fair difference coming off of the quad core, I'm only using a dual core, and wtf its only like $100 more then the core2 was? i'd have to agree with getting your hands on a powercore. the fx units on it are killer, and because it's dsp powered it wont drain your system resources at all. that'll help a lot.

also, try bouncing down dry audio where you can. and putting effects on group channels where practical.

Get a core i5 750 or core i7 860. The mobo's aren't expensive for it.

If you got alot of money to spend, wait till march and buy the 6-core i7 980x.

Just mix the track better if you feel the virus doesn't fit in the mix.

yep fl is a shitter mainly the mixer if you use your fx and plugins it can kill cpu.

witch is why working in stages can be a great way round it all it just means thinking ahead or switching to ableton live because its mutch better at keeping on top off it all then fl.

It seems the highest the core2 go up to are around the E8600, but I'm afraid I'm gonna be in the same position a year from now. Or maybe I can get the e8600 & a new mobo, then overclock it and maybe that would be fast enough? I know this is hard to answer as it comes down to general technique, but what would get me the most bang for my buck? Considering I use FL 9? Thanks guys!
