Setting up your monitors levels

I currently have my studio monitors setup in the proper position and all that. But I thought I read on here somewhere (I can't seem to find it now) about adjusting the levels NOT with your sound card or audio interface but with DAW instead? Apparently you should have your monitors max'd in the interface but lowered within your DAW?

Does this make sense or am I just remembering wrong? I'm currently using the Apogee Duet and use that round knob to control the level, is this wrong?

Thanks!

I'd imagine you'd want maximum sound coming from your DAw then adjust your soundcard volume

There's a bit more to it than that; I did a guide on gain and tutorial on how to calibrate you monitors here:

http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...48&pagenumber=1

Go down to the bottom of the first page to see the tutorial.

I will be updating this when I get a chance, so it has more detail and how to properly use the K-system with external volume controls (and creating markers on them for set DBFS levels etc.)

One last questions, can you guys recommend some good top quality cables? I'm just using some basic ones I bought way back when and I know this can also make a huge difference.

Thanks!

Mogami Cables are fantastic, but they are expensive.

difference might not be as big as you think in home studio setup. As long as cables are shielded and balanced i think you will be fine

One last related question:

Once I've done all this and my setup is at 0db, how do I setup my mixing levels. What i mean is I know I should be mixing at -3db to -6db to leave headroom, but does that refer to all my channels? Or is that only on the master? Or both?

Hope that makes sense, thanks!

everyone has their own opinion on this though

So my goal should be to make sure the master is -3 to -6 for the headroom and just mix to that then right?

-3db is plenty of headroom in my book. The reason they say to leave headroom (i think) is if say you are sending the track off to be mastered, it gives the ME some room to manoeuver....

Some people leave more, some mix to 0db, whatever works for you
