Try read about some of the standard software:

FL Studio (PC Only)
Propellerhead Reason
Cubase
Ableton
Logic (Mac only)

all these gets the job donne, download the demos and try. then buy whichever u like. My suggestion is to get Ableton if your on PC or Logic if your on Mac. Not because their best (they might or might not be), but because they are pretty easy to learn and their flexible, many people use it (industry standard), lots of tutorials and support etc etc.
