Question Teachers, parents and upbringing.

I came across an article online that states that head teachers' leaders fear they could be forced to snoop in children's lunch boxes under plans to tackle obesity.

What are your thoughts on this?.. How much input from teachers into the lives of children is appropriate?

I know that in an ideal world all children would be well brought up and healthily fed by their parents... However, in shcools where this is not always the case to what extent are teachers to replace that upbringing?

My own opinion is as much as necessary and practical.

If a child is being brought up poorly, whether behaviouraly or in terms of diet, then intervention that potentially circomvents the parent is for the best of both the child and the greater society that that child will grow to be part of.

Thoughts?

If the parents feed the child unhealthy food daily, then the teacher should be able to interfere. Better yet a social worker should pay a visit to those parents. We currently have enough fatties to make fun of, no more are needed

Wtf?

It isn’t a teacher’s job to raise kids. Does anyone really think that monitoring 5 meals a week is gonna make any difference? why bother? fuck the fat little cvnts.

There are a number of decent pieces on the food companies that feed public school kids, and the quality of food is pretty poor. A lot of high schools -the one I attended included- have 'a la carte' available for students offered as an alternative to school lunch. This results in most kids eating tortilla chips w/ cheese, a slice of pizza or a salted pretzel w/ cheese for lunch day in and day out. When I was in HS our school store had soda and candy/snacks of all sorts for sale. It's since been replaced with 'healthier' options. It was great as a student but in retrospect explains my physical condition

it actually could make quite the difference considering most junk lunches can have almost as much calories as the recommended daily intake. It is 5 times they will eat less leading american children to be 200lbs instead of 250.

But it's the job of schools to prepare children to function in the adult world, in whatever way is necessary.

Why leave the welfare of a child up to parents who are displaying incompetance.

Yes it is the job of the parents, but it's the job of the parents to do it right. If they aren't doing the job then someone has to.

a school's job is to give them basic tools to succeed in regards to knowledge, not function as 2nd parents. Teachers aren't paid enough to care that much.

If a parent is sending their child to school with a lunchbox full of shit, then chances are that child is eating shit at home, on the weekends, during the school holidays etc.

If a school wants to monitor the food that is provided on campus, then that’s fine. But you can’t really agree that rifling through a child’s/parent’s possessions looking for naughty food is appropriate? Especially considering there’s no real harm in the occasional bit of shit food- what about the skinny, healthy people? are you going to go through their lunchbox too, or are you just going to discriminate against the fatties?

Why?

Why not go further- why not get the school to buy a child’s uniforms if the parent’s cant afford them? Give them lifts to school? Help their parents get over their alcohol addiction? Where does a school’s paternalism begin and end?

You cant make up for shit parents.
