Hello! Riddle Me This

I got into electronic music a few years back. I followed these forums for a while, but I only recently got back into an electronic music phase.

After browsing the forums for several weeks, it seem as if DJs such as Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, deadmau5, Paul van Dyk, et. have lost somewhat of their appeal. Having been away from trance for a while, I'd like your input on what happened.

I am not entirely familiar with the particular nuances regarding House, Progressive, Trance, and the like other than the confusing dabbles that wikipedia can try to fulfill. Part of this is probably due to the fact that I do not tend to classify music other than music that appeals to me and music that does not.

I see threads about "real trance" and "why trance is dying" and "why trance is not dead yet." What's the scoop?

Enlightenment or flaming begins now!

The DJs you mentioned have long since given up pushing the envelope, as far as any of their given genres go. This, along with the increased commercialism associated with the genres these guys play, has resulted in a lack of interest from any listeners with an ounce of discernment, or education in electronic music.

Edit: This happened well before the last few years though. Perhaps not so much with Deadmau5, as he's a little newer to the scene, but I can't say any of his productions have been mind-blowingly creative, nor has he advanced the scene. Other than wearing the gimmick-mau5head. Don't think that counts

As pointed out by Sushipunk this all happened long before a couple of years back. There is nothing particular that's happened with the superstar djs over the last year. Other than following the trends they still play shitty pop-dance with horrible vocals, or heavily generic and formulated uplifting trance. The last couple of years? People have been complaining about this since 02-03, or even earlier

yep..agreed, i stopped liking trance in these 2 years.. probably more 2002 really. it all just got a little heartless.. a little too floaty with nothing about it. there were no signs of change for the better, so i stopped listening to it altogether, and from what i gather its still the same now

Trance became synonymous with cheesy pop-dance, which is the furthest thing from being entrancing. As if only a 140 BPM four-to-the-floor bass line made anything trance.

Future Trance United FTU pres. Cream - You Came - MyVideo

Not to say that it's all bad, however (then again, I'm more forgiving than the bulk of the regulars around here). I enjoy a few tracks on Above & Beyond's Tri-State, & remixes such as Gabriella's Sky (Solarstone Remix) are pleasant on the ears, but not entrancing really.

I see what you mean. If this is the case with trance music at the moment, what alternative would you recommend? Also, are there any trance producers and DJs who stick with classic trance through the majority of their works?

progressive psy has good stuff being made.

John 00 Fleming, The Digital Blonde, Magnus, Vibrasphere, Liquid Soul to name a few.

go to beatport.com and sample random releases in every genre and then dig deeper according to what sticks the most.

no one will really be able to tell you what to like.

another good way would be to browse the dj promo section of this board. Most sets come with genre tags and tracklists, so you can also use this as a tool to find artists that you might enjoy.

I don't really bob up in these threads all that much, but the answer to this question is very simple. Trance may be shitty these days for a variety of reasons, but when it comes down to it, the main reason is that tracks stopped having proper basslines.

Listen to what kicks in at the 59 second mark in this track:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OnTDw75N_k (embedding disabled unfortunately)

Tracks these days don't employ funky or interesting bass like that.
