A question about people who write their myspace profiles in 3rd person...

I'm setting up a more "serious" account, on myspace finally. The fact is I have a lot of music that I think sounds pretty good, or at least much better then what most people have seen me submit on these forums, so I just want people to have access to it.

I was reading other myspace profiles and noticed a lot of people have the habit of writing in 3rd person. So naturally, I sit down, start doing mine in 3rd person, and all a sudden I feel like the fakest mfkr alive.

Then I go read more profiles, and am now rather urked by the idea. So I come here to ask which way is easier for you, or just which way do you prefer to READ a profile. I'm thinking people do it to sound professional, but on another note, its completely fake and deceptive. Do people want to sound like someone actually cared enough about their music to interview them? And like the interviewer actually typed it?

I don't have enough personal motivation to do it either way, I'm a bit turned off by the 3rd person concept, but if it actually made it easier for people to read it that way I'd have no problem doing it for that reason. So if people could answer that I'd really appreciate it, thanks.

Nobody is going to give a shit unless your music is good. I've seen those dorky 3rd person profiles where they slip into 1st person and it makes me laugh.

If you talk yourself up, but your music isn't good then you will look like a fool.

Just be honest about yourself.

Ok, yeh I didn't really say anything about my music. More like how I started, why I love music, what my personal motivations are and what not.
I just wanna make sure noone has issues with people writing them like that, when its obvious they wrote it themself. Think maybe I'll just stick to first person since its what I'm use to.

i would forget the bio. Just state what you do. I think as long as you remain modest and don't present yourself as the 2nd coming of christ, 3rd person is ok. And don't mention classical training as it just sounds lame. Try to stay clear of anything that seems like you are trying to validate yourself unless you have the qualifications or sales or skill to do so.

Thanks Richie, I just finished typing it before I read your response.

If you want to read it obviously I'd appreciate it. That way maybe you can tell me what sounds cheesy and maybe what doesn't.

http://www.myspace.com/sonikkplague

and I understand we argue a lot but I still respect the way you look past that fact and try to help me, so thanks!

fyi: Sonikk Plague is the name I started using after I got my ta account just encase it confuses anyone.

We just used an old write up that was done nearly a decade ago by an interviewer. Since it was written by someone else, it seemed natural to use it as our "official" biography when a label asked for one. Since then we just add the odd sentence or two so it remains updated with the latest information.

I think a biography should explain your experience in the industry, and showcase your career highlights as an artist. Who are you, where did you come from and what have you done are the most important pieces of information contained in a well-written biography. This seems to be the case with most other biographies that I have read from other artists.

If you haven't actually done anything noteworthy yet, then just keep it short and simple, then add to it as you accomplish noteworthy milestones throughout your career.

hey mate if this helps here ya go i wrote it the other day for my
FB fan page. . .
its not that good but it will do.

J.D.C (John) hails from the Northern Beaches in Sydney.

John has always had a musical background and has been surrounded from a young age by everything musical. From studying music, playing the Alto Saxophone for several years, singing in productions & making Hip Hop and Rap songs everything in his life has always been about Music.

It wasn't until he discovered Electronic dance music that his passion unfolded.

DJing was the likely progression from here so this is what he pursued.
John learnt to DJ using two Stanton turntables, an old mixer and some Trance Records he borrowed from a mate. Once he learnt mixing with records he thought it was time to purchase a couple of CD decks.
At this point in time is where he played his first 'payed' gig @ Cerutis Nightclub in Manly.
From then on he started playing House/Electro regularly on Fridays and Saturdays in manly and at numerous parties & clubs across Sydney.

Moulin Rouge
Empire
Le Panic
Henry afrikas
Just to name a few.

Since mid 08' John went back to his roots and started producing Trance. With Influences ranging from his favourite Armin Van Buuren to Paul Van Dyk the music that John creates is fresh, exciting and emotional to say the least.
He is definitely a Producer to look out for...

I like to write them in super-compressed point form with no definite or indefinite subject articles.

"Trance/techno producer since 2002. Recently signed 4th album Big Fluffy Floaty Airy Cloud Dream Tunes to Munchkin Records. Also signed to Black Hole and Anjunabeats. First started producing at age 7 using ModTracker with out-of-tune banjo missing one string. Strongly influenced by Paul van Dyk, DJ Rush, Yanni and Barry Mannilow. Graduated 2006 from Senegal Institute of Audio Technology Correspondence Programme. Dresses casually. Prefers boxers over briefs, wings over drumsticks. Favourite colour: magenta. Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun. End is near. Cake is a lie. God has lied. God has lied. God has lied. A serious error has occurred. Bad command or file name. Abort, Retry, Ignore? Ignore? Ignore? Reactor core critical. Meltdown imminent. Containment failure. Goodbye."
