Re: Knee jerk reaction to Ped deaths coming? Councillor wants 10 kph less speed limits

just imagine.. major roads with 30 km/h speed limit. Side roads at 20 km/h. WOW!
God forbid we ever blame a pedestrian for anything! Jwalking and yapping on a cell phone while crossing the street? Surely lowering the speed limit will solve that!
Toronto... what a joke |
This kind of senior citizen idea has been floated by councillors in many towns. I still remember some jackanape in Kitchener tossing out the idea when I used to live there in the 90's.
I think you ought to stick to railing against specific councillors as opposed to pissing & moaning how every time one(1)councillor has a brain dead idea that it's endemic to Toronto as a whole.
I mean fuck, if you hate it that much, move to a nice hardcore conservative city like Dallas. I'm sure the gun-toting, god loving, drunken rednecks with their ultra strict policies on anything that sounds like electronic dance music coming out of a club after 2am will sit just perfectly with you.
Oh, btw, other than the 70mph speed limit on the Dallas North Tollway, & 60mph on other freeways, when I was there the average speed limits I saw were 30mph (48km/h) on major arterial roads, and 20mph (32km/h) on most side streets.

But this brain dead councillor is probably going to get his way. Because lets face it, most of city council is breandead. And whole elects the braindead council? The braindead electorate of Toronto.
But please dont change the topic with such things as moving to dallas.
Besides as a libertarian who is socially liberal and fiscally conservative, dallas would not be a place id be comfortable in either.

There's even talks to go ahead with 30kmh!!!
Like wtf, no one drives at those speeds, its just a money making scam. |
we are well ahead of you. Sideroads here are 30 km/h and major roads are mostly 40 now.
If this passes expect 20/30 on most roads
btw if this does pass will this apply to cyclists as well? Considering they will be able to break the speed limit (and will) will they be fined as well? Considering that they already habitually run red lights and stop signs, drive the opposite way on one way streets and drive on sidewalks with impunity i gather the answer would be no.

BTW The Ear,
your post comes off to me as someone who agrees with me but cant bear the thought of actually agreeing with me so you go off on a tangent to disguise that fact.

Nah. It's quite clear that I agree on this matter, & yet still disagree with your constant bitching about a city in which you choose to reside. So I offered up an example of a city to which I've been which enacts conservative policy and rejects "nanny-statism" (after all, isn't that what you're trying to escape from?) at almost every turn, and yet has painfully slow speed limits.
The real point is that there's a duality that exists in every city, so it doesn't matter where you go, you're going to have to deal with it.
Also, if you want to get down to the root of the problem, perhaps you should be bitching about the ridiculously low voter turnout in the demographic that you represent, as most policies are coming from the 50+ demographic as this is the one that: 1)Votes most consistently with the highest turnout; 2)Has the most money and therefore ability to sway politicians through campaign contribrutions and bribes; and 3)Will take the time to write a letter/email to bitch & whine about almost getting hit by a car while they were illegally crossing a street.
So perhaps, instead of painting the entire city with a brush weilded by a single councillor every time one of them opens their aging mouths to spew forth a policy that you disagree with, you should start getting constructive and organizing/mobilizing more of the key demographic which you represent. I for one won't let a friend get away with not paying attention to & voting on local political matters.

but not quite to the extreme that we see festering here.

I wholeheartedly agree. I have always encouraged people to vote for this reason. ESPECIALLY YOUNGER PEOPLE. I 100% agree with you here.

Well i guess you can then blame this both on people who do vote and those who dont right?
I def do my part when it comes to trying to convince peers to vote. Perhaps i should start more facebook groups and letter writing campaigns and use that to formulate protests? Maybe!
