Hey all,
when I buy a 12", what am I allowed to do with it? Am I buying the rights to publicly perform it (of course I am)? Can I broadcast it? Can I be paid to perform/broadcast? Can I record it into a mix which I then sell?
How does copyright work for DJs?
Thanks!

you "gotta pay royalties when you braudcast". and to record it on a cd is bootleagin it. i know it sucks but every dj is a criminal. weve all made mixtapes.

no no no...
its only illegal if you do it for profit. if you sell your mixtape to recoup costs of production, its not illegal...or @ least thats what I believe it is

I can’t speak for any other countries, but in the UK, you are allowed to store a recording you have brought in any format whatsoever for backup purposes. So when you buy your 12” there’s nothing to stop you putting it on a tape or CD. It only becomes illegal if you give these tapes cd’s, mp3’s or whatever to someone who hasn’t brought a form of the original recording or you sell them to someone.
Honestly though I wouldn’t worry about making Demo CD’s and Tapes. It’s not this sort of thing the authorities are worried about, it’s the large scale pirating organizations that they’re interested in.
