so my original set up was two cdj 200s and a pioneer djm 400 with traktor scratch duo. now, thanks to the link posted here, I upgraded the mixer to a xone 32.

traktor always worked fine with my djm 400, but now that I made the switch I am having problems. I plugged the cables following exactly how it was on the djm. when I play with the mixer switched to line, I get the high pitch beep from the time code cd, which is normal. when it's switched to phono, the sound comes out like shit. it's all choppy and distorted. I have the audio 4 set to CD control, (I tried switching to phono just in case, but it sounds the same).

I decided to try switching the RCA cables in the back. I switched the line cables with the phono cables. now, when the mixer is switched to cd, the sound of the tracks come out clearly. The calibration circle on traktor, though, is a square shape and gives me a calibration error of "unknown medium."

anyone know what could be going on?

I don't think it could be any sort of latency issues, as I am using the same PC, the only difference is the mixer. I run on windows 7 64 bit.

edit: I have been looking around and the calibration circle being a square would be normal in that case, since I am using timecode cds, but with the wiring set up for vinyl. it's still beyond me as to why the vinyl set up sounds clear though, while the cd set up is not even usable.

sounds like you have some crossed wires or your settings in traktor are off

what possible settings would need to be changed when the only difference is the change from the djm 400 to the xone32?

when I get home today, I'm going to hook up the djm again and see if the problems fix or not. I haven't been playing with my gear for a while and I do remember there being some updates to the drivers somewhat recently.

I'm not familiar with the Native Instruments audio interface, but I assume you've got it configured to have an out and a thru for each channel? i.e. CDJ goes in to interface input, and then is passed straight back out through one output, sound from Traktor comes from the other output (like Serato)? Repeat for the other CDJ.

The issue is that you've got two line outputs from the interface for each channel here, and putting either into the phono input won't work as the level is way too high. The reason it worked on the DJM400 is that the phono input on each channel could be switched to be a line input as well, giving you 2 line inputs per channel.

So unfortunately, since you can't set the Xone32 up in this way, you can't connect it how you'd like. Best bet would just be to rip all your CDs and play them through Traktor so that you don't need to have the signal straight out of the CDJ fed into the mixer at all.

the audio 4 dj outputs are line outputs, like the ones on a cd-player, and unlike the ones of a turntable. thus they cannot be connected to a phono input (which is designed for the input level of a turntable). background is that the line signal level is much higher (400-500 mV as comparede to 4-5 mV) than that coming from a turntable.

also, the frequency spectrum on a phono input is manipulated, to correct the international recording standards (vinyl records contain about -20db lows, opposed to +20db highs).

that's why it's not sounding correctly.

wow, talk about a complete failure of an upgrade.

the main reason i bought traktor scratch was out of convenience of not having to burn and carry all the cds, as well as the fact that searching and organizing is a lot easier through traktor. I also wanted to keep the hands on feel of using a basic pair of cdjs and mixer, as opposed to going all digital and with a midi controller.

there's no such thing as like an adapter of some sort that can convert the line signal to phono?

alright, well forgive me for being a noob in regards to how exactly dvs systems work, but I just left the line connections in the mixer and it works for the most part how I want it. the only set back is that if I were to play a real CD, I am going to have to keep switching the wires around.

my only question that still stands is this: are there line to phono converters? if so, do they work without ruining the sound quality? any recommendations of a particular product?

Why do you want to connect it like that? Doesn't Traktor detect that it's a music CD playing and thus route the audio signal thru to the line output of the Audio 4 DJ? If not, then there should be a switch for it in Traktor at least. I don't really see why you would need to get any signal straight from your CDJs to the Xone:32.

Hi guys, yeah there's a drop-down arrow for each deck where you can select one of three modes.1) Internal playback, 2) Timecode control and 3) signal through.

Make sure you've selected timecode and click on the cd player icon which will highlight a light blue colour.

For playing back normal cds just select the signal through mode.No cable swopping required.

the audio through modus comes with pros and cons.

pro: you can use the traktor-internal effects on standard audio cds, which can be pretty cool but for beat-synced effects (i.e. the slicer, delay etc.) you'll have to give traktor some kind of bpm source (for example: play a beatmatched track on the second deck)

con: your cd-player will have the same latency that a traktor timecode-controlled deck would have. i'm not sure whether that is an issue for you... i wouldn't mind. i'm usually not confronted with a situation like that, i'm using vinyl control...
