recommend me a military fps where...

a person wielding a sniper rifle actually has a purpose. call of duty, battlefield, blah blah blah, neither of those actually give the sniper a purpose. call of duty maps are tiny, making the sniper just another run and gun dude. battlefield maps have shrunk to where they're comparable to call of duty and the ballistics are just dumb

is there an FPS out there where a sniper actually gets to act like a sniper? large maps, realistic ballistics, ect

You might want to try Delta Force Xtreme 2. I've never played it, but Delta Force 2 (way back in 1999) had the best sniper gameplay. The game ran on voxels, which ultimately looked like shit, but enabled massive draw distances, huge maps and the ability for a sniper to actually blend into an environment.
The maps were pretty much infinite in space, so as long as you wanted to invest your time into walking, you could walk to the other side of the moon and adjust for bullet drop.
The developers have gone through many games throughout the years such as Joint Operations, Delta Force Xtreme and whatever else, but if DF2 servers are still up, and the game is $5, you might want to give that a spin.

operation flashpoint 2 is really good for that..but..multiplayer is broken, and single player doesn't let you choose your weapons.
