Suspect named in Pacific Mall slaying

Henry Stancu
A Toronto man has been named on a first-degree murder warrant in connection with the shooting death of a Pacific Mall cellphone shop employee last year.
Chun Kit (Daniel) Cheong, 26, died from a single gunshot wound to the head at XSITE Cell Phones at the mall in Markham about 15 minutes before the store was to close Feb. 20, 2009.
It was the region's first homicide of the year.
Homicide detectives were granted a first-degree murder warrant naming Bryan Valentine Gardner, 21, who goes by the street name "Weezy."
Investigators have interviewed Gardner's friends and family in Toronto, but have been unable to locate him.
Security video showed a hooded suspect leaving the shop where Cheong worked, returning minutes later when the shooting occurred.
Pacific Mall, at Kennedy Rd. and Steeles Ave. E., is the largest indoor Asian mall in North America with more than 400 shops.
It is known as one of the largest centres of illegal DVD sales on the continent. Police have seized thousands of bootlegged merchandise in raids over the last several years.
Anyone with information on Gardner's whereabouts is asked to call the York Regional Police homicide unit at 1-866-876-5423, Ext. 7865, or anonymously through CrimeStoppers at 1-800-TIPS.
