Has this happened to anyone recently?

I applied for a internship at my school for a certain position that I'm very qualified for (my resume/background proves it).

So I get an email today saying that I didn't get the position...not even an interview. And then I found out that one of my friends got the internship.

The problem is, I've seen this person's resume a month ago, and it doesn't have half the shit necessary for the job compared to mine.

So why did they take the less-qualified person? This isn't a case of me being bitter or biased- really...you can compare the resumes/backgrounds side by side and mine is clearly better.

Also- this isn't a case where the person has connections or anything.

They just didn't like the cut of your jib.

They didn't meet to "decide" who got the internship until a week after the deadline to send them in.

sometimes it's not about pre-existing connections, but a personal follow up on the application. if all you are doing to apply for jobs is submit a resume with an application, you are never going to get a job. you have to personally follow up with the hiring manager. and even that doesn't guaruntee anything.

that's not surprising, the person with the best resume and/or experience doesn't always win out. not fair but especially for an internship where they aren't required to keep you, pay you well or pay insurance they can be pretty "whatev" about things. they might not want to put too much energy finding the best person because if an intern sucks you'll just replace them in 3months anyway and at the end of the day how hard can an internship really be?
