Hi all,

I currently have 2 G5 ppc macs... a dual 2.5ghz and a dual 2.3ghz, both with 6gig ram etc etc..

My first thought was to bin them and get a new intel based power mac 8 core monster, or even the 4 core.. but the price is prohibitive and i can get almost nothing for the old macs. So instead I'd rather like to just keep using the two machines I have. They were in different studio but are now in one and I'm trying to work out which is the best way to use them together.

They're both running Logic9 so I could use the Node option, but as far as I know this is limited to Logic built-in plugins.

Option 2 would be to use the audio outs from one and midi in and sort of use it as a processing/audio/plugin box...

Option 3 might be to use a network-based plugin to be able to control and run plugin instances across the 2 machines.

None of the solutions are great imho, but perhaps someone has some bright ideas as to how to make this simple/clean and practical ?

Put a sign on the studio door saying will swap two macs for food? Im kidding I can't think of anything you havent mentioned already..

didnt even know that logic 9 run on ppc. id throw them away and get the imac. apple, the green company (not).

Don't know if it's different for ppc, but if I go to "Logic Pro-Preferences-Audio Units Manager" I can see which plugins are available as nodes, which in my case is all my fx audio units. That option might be worth checking out again.

Another option is plasq wormhole, which you can find here. If you also need midi between the two computers you might need this as well.

I've been looking into something similar myself since I've got an old pc with 40+ inputs lying around that I at some point wanted to communicate with my mac pro so I could use all the outputs of my synths. Because the two soundcards are standard pci they won't fit in the mac. In the end I decided that all the solutions (that I could find anyways) were quite long winded and would cause all sorts of headaches regarding latency and what not, so I'm just going to save up for a fireface800 or something similar and hook everything up to my main machine. I'm mainly using software these days anyways and when I realised I spent more time trying to come up with solutions to accommodate my gear than making music I just put the entire idea to rest.

Saying that though, if you can get Logic Nodes up and running, that actually doesn't look too bad. I successfully used fx teleport back in the day, which seems quite similar to nodes, but that's windows only as far as I know.

Good advice from fatboy - the node available plugins are shown in the plug in manager and it's close to 90% of all my plugins.

Works well and very little hassle once you have it setup.


And what's with all the oldschool TA's crawling out of the woodwork recently?

seen people post on here in the last few days I haven't seen for months or even years!!!
