DRM system?

ubisoft implemented it with assassin's creed 2, and command and conquer 4 has done the same- that is, forcing the player to maintain an internet connection to play the game. for example, without an internet connection and a ubisoft account, assassin's creed 2 won't allow you past the first five seconds of the game, and if you happen to import a save that gets you past that point, it won't allow you to accept any missions or further the plot. command and conquer is similar in that it won't run without you being connected.

bioshock 2 and a handful of other titles has a system similar but less intrusive; if you don't have a legitimate microsoft games live account, it will let you play through the game, but you can't save or load (which inevitably breaks the game)

now, i understand from a piracy perspective on why a game company would decide to do this (it kept me, for example, from being able to properly pirate/play assassin's creed 2) but conversely, if i don't have an internet connection, or didn't pay the bill for some reason and got it shut off, why would the developer fuck me over if i procured the game legitimately? i think they're shooting themselves in the foot with a policy like that.. your thoughts?

Money. Leaving the piracy on the side for the moment, a game tied to a unique online ubi user account effectively kills the second hand game market.

Also AC2 will be cracked soon enough. If you cant that the intrusive copy protection just wait a while. I for one know that while the current cp system is in place i wont be buying any ubi games (which isnt saying much as the only one that i was even slightly interested in was the new splinter cell).
