Re: Re: Sam Harris on TED Talks: Science can answer moral questions.
Hmm... I'm going to watch it when I get home, but I don't like where this is going. Care to summarise the main arguments? The computer I'm using doesn't have a sound card.

The first one isn't as anti-religion as the others. Harris is studying for a PHD in neuroscience and talks about the brain and using scientific reasoning to solve social problems and determine objective morality.

That's exactly what I feared, religion bashing. I'm an Atheist, but I think this approach is extremely wrongheaded.

And I'm extremely sceptical about this.
Hmm... oh, well, it's no use talking before I watch his talks, let's see if he can convince me.

"Science can answer moral questions" sounds like a very pretentious claim to make but you really have to watch the video. It's not really "science" per se but rather a scientific approach towards moral objectivity. It was brilliantly explained, IMO.
And it doesn't bash religion. He only gives examples of the claims religious leaders and followers make about knowing the absolute truth about moral objectivity through revelations from the creator of the universe.

eh...i don't think Harris really showed how "cience can answer moral questions." he just made a case of why it's better for sentient beings to suffer less and how science can do that soon. Not why it's right, or wrong, but why it's pleasurable. he doesn't show why there is a universal "ought" but a universal "less suffering"
