Playa is beautiful!
Lots of great places to dine, both nicer and budget, although I can't remember any names of them. Just walk around and talk to other tourists who have been there awhile.
Not much for nightlife unfortuntaly.
Chichen-itza is definiely a place to visit, although I don't think they let you climb the pyramid anymore. Still worth the trip there, as it'sne of the largest ruins to see in that part of the world.
They also have some great scuba diving across at Cozumel island if your into that. They also have cenotes you can dive in, which are underground caves and caverns. It's pretty incedible stuff, although it can be dangerous if your not expereinced.
I've been to Mexico lots of times but I finally checked out Playa in January. I second the recommendation to check out Xcaret or some excursions.
I went ziplining and rappelled into a cenote with Alltournative and it was a blast!! It's true, you can't climb up Chichen-itza anymore but you can climb the Coba Maya Ruins... it's not that big of a deal, but more of an annoyance to come back down.

I loved the Tulum Beaches and Ruins!!
Also, we had a GREAT experience @ Hidden Worlds, where we went ziplining, and snorkeled DEEP into underground caves....
X-Caret and Xel-ha were fab (although X-Caret was only fun because we scheduled some activities.....the park itself is beautiful but a little theme-park-ish....cool night show and dinner at the end, though!) I would suggest the river snorkeling @ X-caret....

playa is definitely the gem of all of mexico! The beaches are among the nicest in the Caribbean, nightlife isn't that bad, obviously no big clubs, but still some nice venues. I second blue parrot, fun dancing on the sand, and one of the rooms does play house. Other options are La Santa Nera (saw dj heather there) and Bali Good times. Hotel recommendation is either 'Royal Playa del Carmen' or 'Valentin Imperial.' I've stayed at both and both have there own pluses. Royal is more expensive but the only 5 star right in playa itself. Can't help with restaurants though.
