I live in Southern AZ near the Mexican border. I am also of Hispanic descent. I fully support the law for the following reasons. I am not trying to convince anybody to change their minds about the law, i just want to explain myself, as a Hispanic Arizonian.

People say the law is racist. I am looking past the race. I'm looking for the community.

1. I am tired of my friends being scared to go outside their homes. Illegal immigrants constantly break into their houses. Some have been tied up while illegal immigrants rummage through their houses. Some of my friends are scared to go on the fields that they own!

2. I am tried of the death caused by illegal immigrants. Just yesterday a drug smuggler shot an agent. (this was not near my city, but near Phoenix.

Last month a woman's body was found near the side of the road, brutally beaten. The suspect is an illegal immigrant, her husband. Also last month a drug smuggler killed a rancher, on his ranch. Bodies of immigrants who cross the border are constantly found in the area.

3. I'm tired of reading headlines of human/drug smuggling in our local paper. This one is from just a few days ago:

This is not even one full week and it not including the arrests made by our police, the sheriffs, or the Department of public safety (highway patrol) who each maintain their own logs.

4. I am tired of AZ being ranked #1 in kidnappings. 100% of the cases involve the drug cartels.


5. Last, not all illegal immgrants are from mexico. Border Patrol does find people from other nationalities that we have big problems with.

They updated the legislation yesterday - many of the parts that concerned people have been removed.

I dont see why djs would cancel because of it. They shouldnt have politics before their art. Thats for one reason why I support djs going to countries that are extreme. Might change the culture in a good way - not saying change it to western or modern or whatever you think i mean - just to a more welcoming culture of others.

Seems like you have more problems with crime and violence than immigration, in which case you'd think there would be other ways to go about solving the problem (drug legalization??) instead of treating everyone here illegally like they are actually a threat to society. Most illegals aren't here to kinap you or shuttle drugs, they just want to get a better job than they can find back home...

But he's saying at some point something has to be done. While it's obviously the vast minority, that vast minority is causing a lot of fears for the locals and preventing them from going outside for completely other reasons. A few bad apples spoil a bunch. Unfortunately, that's life sometimes.

I think the letter of the law could be written better (and it looks like they are working on that), but what else can they do? The federal government has sat on its hands over this.

Everyone says there must be something else they could do. Have any ideas? Think they haven't tried other things?

Everyone loves to protest. Very few have any other good ideas.

Laws should protect american citizens first and foremost. To me it seems that's the intention of this law. As long as it's written more carefully, other than bring up the good ole race argument, what argument is there? Everyon attaches race to everything in this coutry and uses it to flex what they want. The sad part is that it works way too often.

If this was Montana doing the law because of Canada, what argument would people have then? Surely not a race one.

People have to look past race when it comes to the intention of this law, IMO. Of course some idiot cops will abuse it, but that type of abuse goes on all over the country for different reasons among different races.

I agree something has to be done but at the same time I oppose this law. I think they need to target the traffickers and smugglers instead of the hard working immigrants. Those are the ones causing the problems. Most immigrants are here to work and get taken advantage off. Trust me, I know plenty of them.

John, while you might be of Hispanic decent, but you are far from looking like one. And that is a major reason why you wouldn't get affected. No one will ever even question your status. On the other hand, look at me. I'm an American Citizen and I guarantee you, I would get harassed way more than you would.

I'm not just thinking about my self, I'm thinking about other people. Take my parents for example. They are both US Citizens but grew up in Mexico. Their English is broken and their appearance is not "American" at all. They would be perfect targets. How do you think I would feel if one day I get a phone call and it's ICE telling me they have detained my parents and that I need to go prove they are citizens? That would be horrifying, they are good people who never been in trouble with the law, and yes, they been discriminated against many many times.

Now take my grandfather. He's your typical Mexican man who has the illegal look and works in the fields for minimal wage near the border of Arizona. He's an American Citizen too, but again, he grew up in Mexico and doesn't speak a word of English. He's dark skinned and most of the time he works 24 hours straight out in the fields watering them, so that means he's dirty when he's out and looks like he crossed the river. Off course he would be a target.

Honestly, unless you're in our shoes, I think it would be hard to understand the major issues we have with profiling. It's already bad as it is.

I completely understand what you are saying. But like i said, i looking past race.

My neighbor is a Border Patrol agent. The cartel set him up and one time. They shot him twice in the chest. Luckily, he just got a new indistinguishable vest. He is ok.

The coyotes (smugglers) leave their people behind and have no regard for others lives. If the people cannot keep up, their are left behind in the desert. The temperatures get up to 115 degrees in the summer around the 30's at night during the winter. They give them caffine to make the people go faster, which just ends up dehydrating them. The people have to carry their own water. How much water do you think they carry for a long journey through the desert? Remember, water is heavy. Once they make it to the "destination" it not over. I put it in quotes because it is a common tactic for the coyotes to raise the fees. Fees that they already cannot afford from the start.

Here is a national geographic episode that proves my point. Nogales is about 45 minutes away from me.


I believe in the spirit of the law. People will know that it will be much harder to not get caught in Arizona. If that deters people from coming into the United States, then i see it as lives saved.


This is also what we have to deal with down here:
armed escorts for drug smugglers (they attempt to smuggle 40 lb bales in the bags.)


Along with this, i believe we should have a guest worker program in effect. I am not against people having legal jobs here. i just want everybody safe, both Americans and Mexicans.

Jesse: Both my father and mother were born in Mexico. They legally immigrated to the U.S. My mom taught herself English and went to school to become a nurse at the Martin Luther King Medical Center. My mom helped immigrate my grandma and my aunts as well. They were dirt poor. My mom (like many other Mexicans) busted their ass to legally come over. They way i see it, if my mom can do it, so can everybody else. Hopefully those shoes fit.
