Internet collaborations how?

I've always wondered how people make internet collaborations, big names sometimes simply go some days to other producer studio and this is what i feel like a real collaboration, they're working on the same daw and doing things together but... sometimes they work through the internet and this is what i find strange.

I think that although both figure in the title one of them is the one who carryed most of the project, for example Sasha vs Digweed - Imba track (Original Mix) Sasha mixed in on his daw but both wrote the melodies, this is fairly simple as midi is universal for all daws and they can simply share their approaches of it until they come to an agreement.

Making each one his own interpretation of the track is another option, they share the melody and each one builds the track with his own style, this is evident too.

But... in the case i work with someone beside coproducing the melody... can you add things to his daw project or you merely give your opinion and ask for changes?

I have interest in this collaboration, anyone who has already done something through the internet could share which tools they used and how is this usually done?

Well Immersiv and I co-produced Dream Machine. I wrote the main progression and melody meant for the breakdown and sent it over to Scott, and he wrote and produced the riffs and bass. He sent those to me in .wav files and I produced the track around those, sending him the track as I went and incorporated any new phrases he wrote.

It took a while and probably isn't the best way to do it, but since he uses Reason and I use FL it was the only way we could do it. And quite frankly I think we were pretty successful.

If you're willing to trade .wav files over and over again it'll work for anyone.

i see, i considered working with audio files but i think it's a very inefficient way to work with, a lot of hassle for both parts but specially tricky for the one who has to mix the parts.

If you haven't already, make a dropbox account. Best way to share files.

I used to have a project where my partner and I both had Reason, which is probably the best way of sharing files. If you're not having the same host / plug-ins, audio files are the only real way.

What I tried lately was sharing the same plug-ins too, mostly freeware with someone else, running a project together. This didn't worked out that well because everyone got his favourites and go-to plug-ins your rely on, so we ended up with audio again.

At some point, someone has to do the final mix and sometimes this is the hardest part, dealing with the compromises which elements should be in the final version and which not. However I think that on some point, both will agree on the elements chosen and be fine with the outcome. If not, you either not there yet or you're working with the wrong person.
