Good science fiction books

I'm going to Barnes & Noble tonight to browse and eventually pick up a new book and I think I'm going to go with something sci-fi this time.

What are some good (old or current) sci-fi books I should look at? I don't care what subject, and I would prefer something that's in a series in case I want to follow the story along...

Is Dune any good?

I haven't read it for a few years, but it's enjoyable for what it is. If you want a story arc to follow, you're probably interested in pulpy fantasy-in-space stuff, and it'll do you nicely.

Is Dune any good Well it bloody well didnt become one of the most acclaimed and best selling scifi books of all time by accident. Is Dune any good, seriously.

If youre Another highly acclaimed series if you want to check it out is the foundation series by Isaac Asimov (which encompases the previously seperated Robot and Empire series...look it up, all of them are worth a read).

For something a bit lighter (and much shorter) for starters you might want to pick up the Heechee saga by Frederik Pohl.

Alternatevly, any title of this list will do nicely.

EDIT:
Also you might want to check out the works from Stanislav Lem. He seems to be largely unknown on the west side of the iron curtain, but his early works (later e moved away from scifi) are very good.

If you're going to recommend a Crichton novel, at least make it Sphere or The Andromeda Strain.

Definitely worth it. painted a rather bleak future for America, which given the recent supreme court decision on campaign financing, seemed eerily realistic. i really need to read more...

Crichton is a global warming denier, so I can see why 17sss likes him.
