Couple questions about Torq

I have a gig Saturday night which forces to bring out my Torq rig (small booth). I haven't touched this thing for about a year. Last night I was practicing with it and noticed a few issues. I'm using vinyl for control. I went through the needle calibration for about an hour and just can't find a good sound. The computer is a Macbook Pro, 2.7 or 2.8g with 4g of ram. The mac is only three months old. The needles I'm using are M-44's. The thing I noticed especially with vinyl control, whenever I boost the tempo past 3%, depending on the song, the sound being produced gets jittery, and doesn't sound correct. I've messed with the needle threshold and the buffer and cannot get a good clean sound on some tracks.

I was thinking about going out and picking up the control cd and see if this mat work better. Any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong? One other thing I noticed was the vinyl latency to the computer. Is their any way of correcting that?

Thanks again.

I'm actually gonna buy Traktor Pro after the summer. The whole reason I bought Torq was it's made by Digidesign and the price tag. So far just not happy with it (you get what you pay for) (grin). CD is still my primary, but I should start getting more into DVS.

What type of control do you use Woscar? It seems like the EDM DJ's use Cd control over Vinyl, is this the better way to go?

Without key lock/master tempo more than 3% of the pitch changes the key of the song , that's why it sounds bad. Check your configuration.

And the latency can be changed for sure too. 15 ms it's ideal for most laptops and unoticeable

So I should engage the key lock? I'll give that a try. Thanks. I was looking for the latency in the preferences, couldn't find it. I'll give it another look. Does the Cd control have this type of issue?

I'm not using the DVS now although I have planned to get a couple of used Technics for a while now. Right now I use an Audio4DJ sound card from Native Instruments and a Vestax VCI-100 midi controller. I've had almost no issue with it whatsoever except some sudden audio dropouts and freezes but it wasn't an issue with Traktor at all but with my external hard drive. I have a Macbook Pro as well and Traktor fucking soars on it.

I think it's actually the other way around. Nearly all big DJs I've seen perform using the vinyl control mainly because it allows them to play their old vinyl and vinyl only tracks as well as digital. The best of both worlds.

What do you mean by "sounds jittery"? If you mean that it sounds like it changes the "tone" or key of the track, then it's definitely the key lock. I like to play tracks much slower than their original tempo so I always play with key lock on.

It seemed to do this on the faster tracks. When I would tempo up at around 3% or greater the track sounded untrue. Fake. On a few tracks it sounded like the bassline would be a double. I'm trying to describe it the best way but I'm not in front of it right now. It just doesn't sound like it would if it were played from a cd or vinyl.

I'm gonna try it again with the key lock engaged, and maybe mess with the needle calibration some more and the buffer too.

Thanks again guys for all the help. I really appreciate it. I'll let you know how it goes.

The key lock worked. Thanks again. Now the last question. Does anyone know how to keep the program from switching between absolute and relative mode automatically? Is there a way to pick a mode and lock it? A little annoying.

Do you have Torq 1.5?

Make sure you're running the Elastique algorithm in the options and not the normal algorithm. It is night and day in terms of sound quality.

Also, see here...

???? Where would I find that?

After I engaged key lock and adjusted the buffer it seemed to work fine. The only issue I ran into was with the vinyl. I was djing under a tree and the vinyl was catching alot of dust and other junk, along with the needle. Which caused some stoppage on a couple tunes . But I had the CDJ's out with a bunch of cd's. So I just dumped over to those until I cleaned the vinyl and needles. First step learned on a DVS. Next time I have to DJ under a tree or something similar, I'm gonna just bring cd control instead of vinyl. Or just bring a bunch of back up vinyl.

Or set up a Marquee, or something to cover you while you play Protects it from the rain as well then.
