Any VST's out there for setting up quick CC automation of external instruments? Anyone know of any other crafty ways? I'm using Ableton 8 FWIW

Actually, that's really about right. I find I have the best success by just performing the automation live. Then I can go in afterward and clean up any mistakes.

yah i was being serious lol. a few of my older synths don't have automation control and doing it by hand has really made a difference in my tracks, they sound more ... expressive, for lack of a better term

do what tiesto does, employ someone else to do it.

kinda hard to do it manually on the mopho when it takes 4 360degree turns to go from where i want to be on a break almost instantly back to the normal cutoff point after it breaks.

i used to actually perform the automations live and record it..back when i didnt know how to actually automate.

it's better to play live, because it's not all about playing the C key, it's the pressure you apply and the speed between notes , with automation sound less natural.

I usually do it the same way Anthony, Eric, and LoveHate do it - assign a MIDI track to your outboard synth's MIDI channel, set the track to record MIDI, and start turning the knob(s), then go back and edit the automation envelope as necessary. Things can get tricky though if you don't have a dedicated knob for a given parameter (e.g., it's buried in a submenu). The synth manual should have a list of CC#s in the back for each externally controllable parameter - I assume Ableton will let you create an automation lane and assign the envelope to any of the synth's available CC# (or NRPN, RPN, etc.) - if so, you can just draw it in.

In FLS on the MIDI out plugin , I can select the JP8000 preset and it hooks all the parameters mentioned ie. Filter ,Osc1 etc.. to the SH201 so I can automate using that.Can be tricky but at least you have some playback until your ready to record.

I do all my automations on vsts live via midi controller. Like said, its more expressive and its more fun than drawing a line on the screen ffs.

Combination of two methods.

The Virus and Nord I record automation 'live' when recording the audio into the PC. Sounds stupid but I feel proud of it when done this way, and as others have said it is often more expressive.

VST's, midi controller or automation curves on the sequencer. Depends on the desired result. For example, Filter automation I often use the midi controller to make it less mechanical but if I want a nice smooth volume rise / dip I always use the sequencer.

I dont often use onboard parameters on vst's. I have some pretty good software effects so I route to and automate with these. Ohmforce being the main ones.
