Pitch shifting a loop but preserving the bpm...

hey guys,

i have a pretty straight forward question..

i have this time stretched disco loop that i pitch shifted (using logic's pitch shift plugin) 2 semitone's down so the key will match a track i'm working on, the problem is now it plays slightly off beat. is there any sort of plugin or anything that can pitch shift a loop but preserve the bpm of the loop? or any tricks i could do too accomplish this?

btw using logic 8 on a mac

Turn the loop into a rex file so that the loop can dynamically match the tempo of a song without altering the pitch of the loop, as would normally happen if the audio file was slowed down or sped up !
Just my 2c!

Upgrade to Logic 9, you can then use the flew time tool to correct it...

I'm on logic 9, but as I remember you should have time and pitch machine. When you click on the audiofile and get the wave editor at the bottom of the screen, go to factory, then time and pitch machine.

This lets you, er.....change the pitch and time of a loop of sample.

Hey presto!

That is unless you mean change the rhythm (not the BPM) in your OP.

Audacity does this really nicely too if you don't change it more than a few semitones at a time.

thanks for the tips guys

actually found ableton a hell of alot easier to do this sort of thing.

just opened up the loop, warped it then just went into sample editor and tuned it to -2 semitomes, rendred it. problem solved.

wish logic would beef up there sample editor or better yet it would be pretty spectacular if ableton and apple teamed up to make a ableton/logic hybrid that implements the best of both DAW's in one.

now there's an idea...

They have beefed it up in logic 9 with the fluid audio thing. Major improvement on audio timestretching and pitching.

go to:

http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/logicpro/

and scroll down to the part about flex time.

yeah i'm still on 10.4.11 tho and don't plan on upgrading OS's anytime soon as tiger is rock solid for me and the idea of formatting everything from scratch sounds like a nightmare, so will have to just wait a bit till i upgrade.

what you need is convert your region into an apple loop using the apple loop editor.

What I don't like about apple loops is that you either lose transients and/or timing accuracy (still).

There's an extra app that you can buy, and that will appear in time and pitch machine, it's called Soundtoys Speed, it's highly accurate, but it's as expensive as ableton live on its own.

There is also UVI workstation that is free, and does timestretch on the fly. You may want to try it out. It's not bad.

A nice addition to your setup would be fxpansion guru or motu bpm if you really don't want to upgrade your logic. But believe me, L9 is what I expected it to be, and even better.
