They all get the job donne, they all have their +/- but in the end its whats suits your needs. I got alot donne with Reason before, but ive run out of creativity in it as i just keep doing the same things, so im trying new things, currently Logic which seems to be great. Ive also been sniffing on Ableton but I need to upgrade to full version before i even bother doing anything but djeing on it.

Try to think whats important to u?
- VST or Recording? Forget about Reason
- PC? Forget about Logic
- Awesome internal instruments and included samples? Forget about cubase
- Wanna make EDM? Forget about Pro Tools

Me? nope, i genuinely want to know for myself, i have reason and logic and i love them both, still only getting used to logic, although i hear allot of good things about ableton, so if anyone has it, let me know what you think of it

Could you please elaborate more about each of those 4 drawbacks for Reason, Logic, Cubase, and Pro Tools?

I've been searching these forums and doing some research--don't you need VST's to begin to produce EDM? If you can't use VST's in Reason then what else would you use? Why do you say that Pro Tools is no good for EDM? Sorry if these are newbie questions but I'm just trying to get a basic understanding of the +/-'s of these programs. Thanks!

VST = Virtual Synths. U dont need it unless you go for a DAW that doesnt have included synth and your not using hardware-synths. actually alot of people work without synths at all, theyr using loops and samples instead. Reason, Logic, Ableton all have included internal synths and instruments which gets the job donne, so by selecting any of these you dont really need VSTs. Its all in the box in those, and thats whats great about those three imo. If u plan on recording anything (singing, guitar, synths whatever) you should forget about Reason as its not supported (yet). If u plan on working on a PC then Logic is out of question as its not supported. Maybe Ableton is your best choise. But u already have Reason and Logic you say? Then whats the problem? Just get a proper soundcard and monitors and start watching tutorials on youtube.

I have not purchased any program so far.

I can see the advantage of having a program with built in synths, etc.(correct term is 'closed DAW'?) but I have seen that there are tons of external (is 'third party' the correct term?) VST which I've seen people use on youtube videos.

Would you be limiting yourself by chosing Reason for example? Wouldn't you have more options available to you by finding the best external VST instead of relying on the internal ones?

I suppose another consideration would be money. If you have to purchase several external VST's then I assume this will be considerably more expensive then purchasing an all in one package.

Would you say that chosing an all in one package is better for a beginner?

Please tell me if this is correct? I'm sure its more complicated then my simple question but I just want a basic understanding to build on.
One way to create synth sounds is to use a synthesizer (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ..._GT_61_Key.html) or a VST (either external or internal).
If I use a VST then I would need a MIDI controller keyboard(http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...kII_49_Key.html)

Reason is the only "closed" app i can think of, it doesnt support VST nor Recording (it can be used as slave in other apps though but dont worry about that just yet).

Eventhough theres included instruments in Logic and Ableton both of them supports VST too, if u ever feel like the included ones arent good enough u can always get some VSTs in those. So then ur basicly left with two choises imo. Logic or Ableton.

If i where to start out fresh today id might go with Ableton as it is supported both on Mac and PC. Right now im on mac so it doesnt limit me to either of them. Im trying to learn both atm actually after many years in Reason, but i havent upgraded to full version of Ableton yet so now im only using it for djeing while learning Logic first.

I personally dislike Ableton... A LOT, but it's all personal preference, hell if you like fl studio, use it, if you like logic, use it. Just try them out, you an download trials, don't listen to people who say this is better than that.

This is spot on. I've tried ableton and not really gotten on that well with it. Tried Maschine as well and it's not my cup of tea (actually trying to sell it at the moment).
