labels geting your first signing etc ....

ok so ive been producing for 6 or more years now and took it to the next level over the last 12 month with buying software and equipment etc, my last 2 songs are the only 2 songs ive ever sent to labels and ive only sent them to well known big labels or labels from well known producers who i like, i would say 20 % have replied and 30 % have downloaded the tune this leads me to believe that alot of labels only download tunes from people they have heard of.

do you think its worth holding out for a bigger label or just send it to every digital trance label out there ?

the replies i get from well known labels are good, even rob stevenson has shown an interest in my latest for his new borderline label for example and his quote
" Personally I think the music in this track is absolutely top rate. Amazing riff, excellent chord sequence and really catchy. However, I think the production lets it down somewhat. Don't get me wrong its not bad quality!! Everything is clean and tight sounding and all the sounds work well together, however, it doesn't have that 'expensive' and polished sound that todays tracks have. I think the best way to describe it is a 'depth" he ends up saying they would be interested in signing it but the production would have to be improved eg better swooshes filters atmoshperes etc.

im not sure how much better i can make it lol
, to me it sounds better than alot of stuff i hear on trackitdown and beatport,

would you hold out for bigger labels or send them to everyone?
ive been told a few horrer stories with regards to signing to smaller labels too

send it to me

[email protected]

i'll give you an honest opinion vs. what i normally hear and possibly an offer to sign it and get some remixes done.

don't be afraid of shopping tunes around. just because you send a demo to a small label doesn't mean you have to sign it with them. if they only offer you 40% and you wanted lets say 65% then you can tell them to take a hike.

theres a lot of quality "small" labels out there so look around a bit more. very, very few people start at the top with big labels. you gotta pay your dues first.

funny story here. friend of mine who helps me with the label was trying to give jaytech a burnt copy of a track we were promoting (Tom Day - Determination) and I had sent out the email promo a few weeks before. So Jaytech tells him he'll check out and then says, dude, listen to this next fucking track. And guess what it was. Tom Day's Determination. Place went off. Was in Denver @ Beta (club owned by Jonas, the owner of Beatport)

So, yea, don't worry about your music getting into hands of the big jocks. It gets there. All labels get it there but these big jocks pay attention to names and labels and dont have time to listen to everything. As you can see, we have had quite a bit of play from names, so there is solid credibility behind the name.

i'll get to your demo asap. im, as we speak, copying over all my hard drive files to an external and about to build my new computer - I'll be in touch soon though. i have a laptop I work from as well

I'd rather sign to a smaller label with a distinctive sound that only releases one track a month than a huge label which just releases anything called "trance" which signs 10 tracks a month.

Most good DJs I know don't really look at the big labels catalogues because you have to wade through too much stuff to find what you want, and everyone knows the name of the label and is buying all their stuff already, so every other DJ will have their tunes. Small, new labels are the best place for DJs to go for music no one else has.

yea there are a lot of pros and cons for each one. i think theres a good middle ground there where you can be a solid well known label but only release quality. Mango Alley and Baroque seem to really fit this catagory, with Mango Alley being much smaller.

In the end, regardless of if you are releasing 100 tracks a month, it needs to be quality. If it's not good music, then it has absolutely no business being on a distributors site. Especially this day and age with the garbage overload we have.

You'll notice Olympik hasn't released a track in quite some time after releasing a lot, and there is a reason for that. The main reason is not enough good labels and remixes coming my way, and the other is a revamped strategy that is similar to what Bonzai is doing, but different. (Confusing, I know) - Basically, I want more diversity within the label. I want more ambient, film, dnb, dubstep, breaks, etc. 4 minute film instrumentals get me just as excited as a 7 minute prog house slammer. in fact i signed a 3 minute film track today.

Well its definately good to see that stuff getting released on dance labels. Although to be heonst, I'd probably include a prog remix on each single since that seems to be your core market.

I tend to prefer labels where you know what you're getting on them rather than ones where you're never quite sure what style their next track will be in. But it always appeals to me when theres something completely left field in there occasionally too. I just think it should be an occasional thing rather than the standard.

You guys seem to be doing well for youselves though so keep up the good work
