do you listen to your conscience?

im pretty narcissistic so this question comes off weird for most but im just curious

is there ever points in your life where you do shit that goes against what you could consider society's standard morals? for example. destroying an engagement just to get laid?

ive seen a lot of shit lately and heard stories that makes me go "really?" and i wonder sometimes if people just completely ignore what they deep down think or if they even register it.

i know for myself sometimes i dont even realize what actions im doing could affect people. i sorta just do. i get on that whole stance of either "its not my problem" or "whatever"

i think im a shitty human being.

It's 'conscience' you're talking about, which is rather different from 'conscious'.

To be fair though, a narcissist probably wouldn't pose the question in the first place. So you might be ok on that front.

Not thinking through your actions to their potential outcomes is just being a dumbass, and not much more. You'll get better at that as time goes on (hopefully )

I've made some pretty fucked up decisions against the grain of my conscience, yeah. Things I knew I'd hate myself for later, but couldn't stop myself from doing at the moment. Just part of living and learning man.

I think we all have, lol.

The real question is, what has r5a just done to warrant this thread?

Spill the beans.

Many people are what we could call "present-oriented": they focus on what's going on right now with little or no focus about the future or the past. Some others live on past events, thinking about how great (or how painful) something was in the past, and they're the "past-oriented" folks. Finally, there are those who are always weighing the different possibilities in the future, and which could be called "future-oriented". This is by no means three discrete categories, and you can comfortably be anywhere in this continuum, though there's a tendency to find yourself most of the time in just one of these possibilities.

I am a pretty future-oriented person myself, and I'm always considering the practical meaning of my major actions. "If I drink and drive, what meaning will this action have in my life and what impact may this have on the life of others?". I'm always doing this quick flashback-forwards and trying to imagine three or four different outcomes and I ponder about how plausible they are. Surely, I can't predict everything regarding those around me, but I can safely assume a few things about how my actions may affect myself and how I'm going to cope with them in the future.

That being said, would I destroy an engagement just to get laid? Well, if it's my engagement, no, I wouldn't call it off unless I had a very good reason. If it's someone else's engagement and my getting laid with this person may cause the end of their relationship, I'd made my intentions very clear - if she decides to go on, she clearly doesn't care about her engagement as much as she cares about her immediate pleasures or, taking a more narcissist approach, about myself. In the former case, there's no reason why I should care; in the latter, there's no reason why I shouldn't embrace it and see what comes out of it.

Let me also say you're not a shitty human being. You just have different priorities. You probably live a much simpler life and, if that makes you happy, it's none of our business.

So you hate society, but you're going to wait until someone else starts a revolution?

I do my best to make decisions based on reason, but I'd be lying if I claimed that my conscience did not occasionally influence my choices.

Every day, and I don't feel the least bit bad about it.
