Scared my hearing might be shot

Since about a week ago, sounds in my left ear have been muffled, like someone put a low pass filter on it and turned down the volume a bit. Listening to music is very annoying because everything feels a bit lopsided. There is also a dull, nearly constant pain, but it is only mildly irritating, not strong enough that I feel the need to take anything. Wondering what might be going on, though.

I have no allergies at the moment and no other signs of cold or other sickness, and I don't remember being exposed to any especially loud sounds recently. I am seeing a doctor tomorrow about something unrelated to this, so I suppose I will ask her what she thinks.

Anyone else have hearing scares, or even permanently damaged hearing from illness or noise?

Could just be earwax. If the pain gets worse it might be an infection. You're probably not deaf in that ear, but you really should mention it to the doctor, because infections can lead there if left untreated.

As for the other part of your question, yeah, I've had some cumulative hearing loss from all the club nights. I can't really hear silence anymore, there's always very subtle white noise in the background that makes it hard to hear very quiet sounds. Nothing one can do about it though; just protect your ears so as not to make it worse.

+1

I had some similar problems for the past few months, and it turns out that I have fluid in my ears that is not draining properly. In my case its allergy related, so the doc just prescribed some allergy medicine and it's already getting better.

tip: when you're not making mixing decisions on the bass portion of tracks....turn down the bass eq on your speakers/monitors or filter it out with EQ...this will help save your hearing in the long run...especially if you use headphones. It'll also help you make better music and mixes, lower frequencies get in the way of concentration and hearing the mid and higher frequencies properly.

bass isn't what ruins your hearing. The natural resonances of your ear which tend to boost the mid range area are the frequencies which you need to care about. Oh kismet.

Or even better...if you dont want to mess with EQ's...replace the kick for a while with a kick that is easier to listen to.

If you had some credibility...i'd believe you. You lost all of it in that other thread.
