Audio 8DJ Channel broken.. Woohoo

Well last night I had a pretty important gig.

Luckily popped in ages before i was playing so decided to set up early only to find one of the decks wasn't calibrating (vinyl).

Swapped everything round and problem seemed to be the right channel on Channel B. Wasn't working.

Little green numbers were lit up for Channel A 1,2 and Channel B 3, the number 4 wasn't lighting up.

I'm gutted. Let alone for the fact that I've had the unit over a year so warranty is out the window I'm guessing and the fact that I'll have to shell out another 365 euro for another one.

Which is something I can't afford as if I'm honest my confidence in the product has gone down hill after this. I've read online that this has happened to a lot of people and that it's not just an isolated incident.

Has anyone else had problems with theirs or know anyone who has had a similar thing happen to them.
Is it easy to get repaired? Does anyone out there know anyone who might want to buy a 3 channel sound card who uses traktor with control cd's.

I only ask as Channel B is the channel that's affected and it's only Channels A and B that the control Vinyl work on.

I'm assuming it's the preamp that's gone. Although i haven't a clue really. Just annoyed, I expected something to happen to my laptop before anything would happen to the audio8. Always thought it was a work horse but after doing some research on this it seems this is all too common a problem.

:/

are you sure it's the input and not any of the cables or the headshell holding the cartridge? did you hear the "beeping" sound coming from the vinyl on both sides when switching the corresponding channel on the mixer to phono?

Fuck it - Pop it open, and look for a dry solder joint. You could run a volt meter over the relative solders (continutity check). You may also see a popped resistor or diode. It's like you're going to invalidate the warranty.

If I were still in the UK I'd tell you to send it to me and I'll have a look but it's not going to be worth sending it to the USA with all the bloody customs fees.

Wait, just had a thought - does it light up at all (i.e red?)

Nope I was reading about it lighting up red for certain people but mine just isn't lighting up at all.

Macgyver, i've swapped cables around and everything and it's just the one channel on Channel B that wont light up eg. receive a signal.
Hooked up the other turn table up to, used different rca cables, all to no avail.

That's disappointing. Were you able to play the gig via other means? I've been meaning to start carrying a wallet of CDs with me just in case something like this happens.

Ah yeah I was fine. It was the first time however that i didn't burn cd's with the tunes i was going to play that night. Usually i just burn two cd's with most of the tracks i want to play that night. It's only two cds so doesn't take long.

I just hooked up the audio8 straight to the mixer and mixed internally with an external mixer.

Had i had a few more minutes to set up i probably could have gotten the cd time code to work on channels A and C but time was a ticking so i went with the safer option.

Still had a great time and the crowd enjoyed themselves so all was good

Still trying to find out what exactly has gone wrong.

Were you using the awful traktor cables, or did you have the turntable plugged directly into the box?

Does it still have the problem with a CD timecode input plugged directly into the box on that channel?
Try that first- process of elimination.
If that works ok, then yes its probably the preamp.

You could use your own external pre-amp for that channel, or if you feel comfortable, open it up and have a look and see whats blown.

FYI- ive not had many problems with the audio 8 - 99% of traktor problems is due to hot plugging, or software error, although thankfully the newer updates and versions solve most of these.
The box is pretty reliable and robust

I was using the awful Traktor cables

Funny thing is I'm just about to change them. I was playing at a festival so not sure if there might have been a spike of some kind. I dunno clutching here.

I'll have to try and plug a cd timecode input into the channel but i remember trying it at the club and it didn't work so i think there's actually something wrong with the actual channel.

I would feel comfortable opening the thing up but wouldn't have a clue what i'd be looking for etc so think it would be a waste of time.

I don't have a cdj on me so is there anything else i can plug into the unit to see if it's only the preamp that's broken.

Because i'm not getting a red light on the channel i have a feeling it's something else. If i wasn't at work i'd call NI in germany and ask their tech support guys.

Cheers for the help so far lads.
Good to know you've had few problems with the Unit Freak. Would you put any spikes or static feedback down to the cables? Or better question would you say the cables had a part in this, or is it the cables themselves that usually go on you and not the soundcard, because of the cables. If that makes sense

Thanks,
steve

hi-fi CD player?
As long as it plays a CD it should work for testing purposes...
As a last resort you could try ripping the control disc as a WAV, playing it back via your computer through the audio output which is plugged into the soundcard via the appropriate cable.

As for your last question, i know ive said it before a few times, but I used to have loads of problems and hassle with traktor - then i stopped using the cables both for my boxes AND for visitors boxes (no matter who they are- i'll patch it in using my own cables) and have had basically zero problems since.

Cool well, Katmaus, the legend that he is. Is sorting me out with cables. So looking forward to getting them.

I'll hook up a cd player to the soundcard tonight although i'm nearly certain that the channel doesn't work.

Doubt i'd be able to sell the thing with one channel busted. Although people using CD timecode could still use 3 decks.

I really can't afford to buy another soundcard at the moment. Tits.

You'd be surprised.... i encounter more & more people nowadays using traktor with X1 or 1D controllers and internal clock and not actually using any timecode at all , at least certainly in the genres i work mostly with.

At any rate, if you DO need to sell it, you will be able to...as lond as you are upfront about it, so dont stress
