Releasing a reworked track.

Hello. I have seen that some artists pick an old track and remix it but they release it under their own name.

A few examples this year so you can understand better:

Dash Berlin feat. Solid Sessions - Janeiro
Markus Schulz feat. Justine Suisse - Perception (Original Mix)*

*This confuse me a lot because the original is by Cass & Slide but they're not credited...

So is legal to rework a track and release it under your own name? I always wanted to rework a track by Alphazone, the title would look like Rodri Santos feat. Alphazone - Forever (Original Mix/Rework) , i'm asking because i plan to release it if has quality.

Anyone can enlighten a bit on how this things work?

Thank You

not legal but you will have much less headaches if you don't put the original artist in the name as you are pretty much admitting it is their track. Either way legal or not , nobody is going to give a flying fuck.

Its a cover of the track from Cass & Slide, a complete rework.. this is probably why they arent credited. Havent heard the new version of the other track, but i believe it contains the vocals from the original track and therefore isnt not a cover.

The way you can get round it if it goes to pear-shaped, is by saying you have never heard the original

and considering most melodies in trance aren't melodies but chord arpegiations, you can't actually copyright that or arrangements either. Not that these things ever go to court. Hell I have the qualifications to be a court expert. I'l vouch that this techno isn't really music at all so how can we really have a case regarding musical intellectual rights. My retainer is a free flight and a few grams of afghan heroin.

well i don't really fear the legal issues because Alphazone seem to be over and if they sue me will surely lose money... i will call the track the same as the original because they deserve my respect for what he did...

However is hilarious how many artist copy the melodies from the first note to the last ,sometimes very famous songs that i can't believe the A&R team doesn't know them, and they release it happily...

Well thank you

The track has not the original vocals.
The original vocals came from Naimee Coleman and the Markus Schulz version has Justine Suissa as vocalist.

I'm still pissed off I didn't download the parts of Janeiro when I had the chance . I love every bit about the original and nalin and kan mixes. Got a remix oppurtunity way back from a label that bought tons of old catalogue and they had remix packs up for just about any big classic you can imagine (Janeiro, Carte Blanche etc).

If you buy the rights to the track from whoever holds them you can do whatever you wish with the track.

Yea that's true. Personally I wouldn't even think of officially releasing rework/cover without the labels' permission that owns the rights.
