Its quite easy to pick the basics up, ive started with just s simple guitar and a book of chords and managed without a problem. Now, that you can find all that on the internet its even easier. Just expect your fingers to bleed for a while.

Because I want to know if anyone has been able to successfully teach themselves how to play guitar. For instance piano, I don't see anyone being able to teach themselves how to play above a mediocre level. The fingerings and chord changes just become too complex.

I had lessons from a really good Jazz guitarist for a couple of years and if you are serious you should find a good teacher as they will stop you from getting into bad playing habits. However like Moongoose has said you can learn a lot from the internet now which was not an option for myself when I was learning to play.
On a side note, one of the most impressive things I've seen on the guitar was seeing Steve Vai playing this thing live, actually using all 3 necks at once. He also played one shaped like a love heart that looked fucking ridiculous. His style wouldn't appeal to everyone though mind you.

I have but I don't recommend it whatsoever. If you try teaching yourself guitar (or really any instrument, for that matter) you get into really bad habits that will be hard to unlearn if you decide to try formal instruction and will probably stop you from learning anything more difficult than basic techniques. I never really learned that lesson so now I can only sort of play the piano and guitar. I also haven't touched a guitar in about two years so that just makes it worse.

Have to agree with you. I haven't played seriously for a few years now and it really shows. It's something you need to practice a lot, be patient and stick with it, or your playing deteriorates.
