Brisbanite smokes pages of Bible and Koran, asking 'Which is best?'

This is probably PKC's brother who happens to dwell in Stu's basement:
quote:
An Australian lawyer, Alex Stewart, has smoked pages torn from the Koran and the Bible, posting the video on YouTube just days after an American Pastor's threat to burn the Muslim holy book caused worldwide outrage.

In a 12-minute clip entitled "Bible or Koran – which burns best?" Mr Stewart, who works for the Queensland University of Technology, holds up the two religious texts before ripping them apart and lighting the rolled up pages.
At one stage he inhales deeply from one of the roll-ups before blowing out the smoke and commenting: "Holy".

The video, which has since been deleted, was posted on the video-sharing site over the weekend, coinciding with the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
Last week Terry Jones, a controversial Christian preacher who presides over a small church in Florida, drew international condemnation after announcing a plan to burn 200 copies of the Koran.
"With respect to books like the Bible and the Koran, whatever, just get over it," Mr Stewart said in the footage. "The video was a joke video, of course," he added.
"People do this stuff all the time and if people get really upset about this then they're taking it far too seriously."
Mr Stewart, a member of an atheist group in Brisbane, has begun a period of leave following a meeting with his employers today. He insists he wasn't smoking drugs in the video but had sprinkled grass cuttings into the rolled up pages.
"The university is obviously extremely, extremely unhappy and disappointed that this sort of incident should occur," Queensland University of Technology vice-chancellor Peter Coaldrake said.
Islamic groups urged Muslims not to react to the provocation
"There is no need for this kind of thing, just to create disunity and disharmony among people living in Australia," said Sheik Muhammad Wahid, president of the Islamic Association of Australia.

The fact that he smoked pages from both the Bible and the Quran was really ingenious. As for the "disunity and disharmony", I really couldn't disagree more... Voltaire used to claim that humour could set us free and, once we laughed about something, we'd start seeing it under a new light. I reckon this is what we all need: to stop taking things so seriously and accept that faith is not a matter of life and death.

Theres a theory going about 4chan that anything is allowed if you do it for the lulz. Some say that if at the end of WW2, instead of committing suicide Hitler explained to the allied forces that all those jews...that was all for the lulz, they would all together be having a beer later that day and reminiscing joyfully about the past 5 years.

Haha, I should've been more specific.

Had the Germans laughed about Hitler's ideas before he ordered those atrocities, they probably wouldn't sound as grave and lofty as they were taken to be. This is why we can't have nice things: some people take ideas way too seriously for their own good, and end up doing something stupid as a result

I am also of the opinion that if you can laugh at it, you can live with it. Especially when the joke is about religion.

I get that you're trying to be funny, but this really doesn't make any sense.

And, as usual, neither does this.

The bible is an idol, the khoran is an idol, people are worshiping it as if it is god - the book is not god, it never has been god.

A black stone is not god? Why are people bowing to a cube? Isn't that idoltary?

What about the cross, isn't that idoltary.

The list goes on and on and on.

These people don't even adhere to their own religion then they get all upset when someone else doesn't.

It is understandable because they've corrupted their own religion but the point is a valid one, and easily understood bas.

It appeared as though in the florida burning it was hate crime related though so it is clear why the act shouldn't have been supported.

This one just seemed to be irreligious, and potentially ignorant of the offensiveness of the act. or perhaps a publicity stunt.

I bet you 5 to 1 there have been a bunch of khoran burnings that have gone unreported.

I have both a khoran and a bible in my house I have no plans on burning them. But if I needed the heat, I would, if god didn't provide it. I would not however do it to offend someone. And if they took offence to me attempting not to freeze then it is them in my opinion who is out of touch.
