Question

Ok,

I've finally reached a point where I want to (TRY TO) compose my own tracks.

So...firstly...can anyone recommend some computer software that would allow me to make
some nice trancey tunes?

If not computer software (which I prefer)...what kind of equipment would I need?

Secondly - For any of you readers who have made their own tracks/songs or even mixes...
care to share em with us?

More questions on the way.

If you don't have any experience in making music (electronic or otherwise), it might be a good idea to start messing around with loop-based proggies. FruityLoops is really fun to mess around with it and quite powerful too, if you're not shooting for studio-quality productions. Rebirth is also fairly good, it gives you computer-based emulation of two Roland TB-303 synths, a 808 and a 909 drum machine. I've heard some nice stuff made with SOnic Foundry's ACID, but never had a chance to mess around with it myself.
If you are looking for more professional stuff, try CuBase - but it is very demanding hardware and knowledge-wise. And another thing, if you are serious about producing (ie. not just making a few choons), it might be a good idea to grab a MIDI keyboard to play in the melodies through ... very useful.

I've been doing some tracks with Acid and it works great .. not the high quality you can have with CuBase .. but Cubase is like 1000x harder to understand and you'll probably waste more time on learning the program than creating your music .. If you want some of my tracks, I can maybe share with ya .. It's not all trance stuff .. more electronica .. but if you're interessed ..

I do a little bit of tracking with Modplug Tracker (www.modplug.com), it's quite easy to use when you get the hang of it - and you can make some cool stuff with it.. admittedly, it's all sample based, so the quality of the track is based quite a bit on the quality of the samples you have.. but some people have made some damn fine stuff with it..
