What do people use and recommend for general high- and low-pass filtering within a track? I know what I want when it comes to EQ, but I would imagine a fat, analogue-sounding filter would be best for fading elements in and out. Basically I'm looking for anything better than Fruity Filter at this stage, which is a joke. I had a demo of SoundToys FilterFreak once and found it amazing, but I'm open to hear others.

BX Cleansweep V2 is a pretty good dedicated hi/lo pass and also free

Volcano 2 is probably one of the best sounding commercial all round filters, especially if you want something for sweeping.

How are different quality sweeps even noticeable in songs?

Dunno, but the hi pass filter in IIEQ sounds very different to the one on the standard Cubase EQ.

Moar analog

Well, try it out. Try out some different filters, some different filter slopes. Depending on the amount of boost at the cutoff frequency, the effect will be quite different.

And yes, manufacturers build imperfections into their filter designs to create a particular sound. You could create an absolutely perfect filter very easily, but it would be unlikely to sound musically appealing.

I usually use my ableton filters as those are in my template and contected to my midi-cotrollers from the beginning on - makes it easier to use - but for "special fx" I go with Fab Filters.

You can notice a difference between lives filter and volcano2 when sweeping for effect. When sweeping, notching in 2 places (not just at cut off) can also give good effect.
