The first note of the phrase will tell you the key if I remember from music class. But then you have to listen for accidentals because if there are, then the key is minor.

Every key has a relative minor. The relative minor is THREE semitones lower than your major.

go take some music lessons, it's pretty hard finding a key with no music knowledge. if you care so much, it's worth...

any synthesizer or something with keys on it would do...

I can't really give a method for finding a key.. I just sort of noodle around until I get the right notes, then noodle some more until I'm sure it's the right one. It just sounds right if you are in the right key.. hard to explain.

Of course there's really no point in knowing the key of a song if you're trying to mix it, as changing the tempo will change the sound of the song. You just have to use your ear to tell what sounds good and what doesn't...

When trying to find the key, find the root key first (just one simple key on a piano for example). Once you found that, try a basic minor chord or a basic major chord of that root key. The one that seems to blend in the tune the best is the key you are looking for.

Another way is to try and work out from listening how to play it (on whatever instument it doesn't matter). Then write down what the notes are and see which scales the notes fit. Then play the scale over the top of song and if it fits there's a chance you've found what key it is in.
You would of course need to know your scales and some general musical knowledge. Only fairly basic stuff. It isn't too hard to pick up if you put your mind to it, read some books and ask a music teacher if worse comes to worse.
