Wierd EQ effect between 2 elements

I'm reading "Mixing with your Mind" again, and I have come to the part where he talks about listening to another element besides the one you are EQing and how its a different experience.

It was a while ago when I tried this out, but when I played around with two elements it had a strange result. I had one sound that was almost a sine like blip with not many harmonics. Then there was also a saw tooth like bass. Whenever I boosted the bass, it seemingly boosted the blip, but not the other way around.

Is this wierd?

What do you mean when you say boosted? Did you raise the volume of the samples or did you EQ a specific frequency?

I boosted the hi's with a shelf. I don't have the project anymore.
