Hot Natured - Equilibrium [Culprit]
Press release:
| quote: | Culprit is thrilled to be releasing the second EP, ‘Equilibrium’ from Hot Natured, Jamie Jones and Lee Foss’ white-hot production alias. Hot Natured’s debut EP for Culprit ‘h.e.a.d.s.’ showcased their funky hypnotic house sound, something they have further refined, explored and evolved on ‘Equilibrium’, to be released on vinyl June 15, 2010 and digitally on July 28.
Since their debut release Hot Natured have gone on to release much vaunted takes on MGMT’s ‘Electric Feel’ via Wolf+Lamb, unveiled their new label, Hot Creations, and further showcased their sound with a debut live performance at Culprit’s WMC label bash and at their own stand-out parties at both DEMF and WMC. The titular track from this EP was featured on Ewan Pearson’s lauded ‘We Are Proud Of Our Choices’ mix-CD for Kompakt earlier this year.
Foss and Jones are two of the most exciting young producers working today, and as Hot Natured have honed their own distinct stamp on contemporary techno and house music, or as they themselves have put it, ‘a sunny and modern take on some classic and future classic music’. This EP showcases much of Hot Natured’s signature cosmic techno with distorted vocals layered over wonky synths to produce warm sexy spacey funk. ‘Equilibrium’ is actually a direct result of Culprit getting a very rare Jupiter-8 analogue synth into the hands of Hot Natured whilst in LA, it was something Jones loved so much he couldn’t bear to part with it, and promptly went out and bought his own.
Wintertime – a very impressive stretch for Hot Natured, leaving their patented disembodied vocals and a more ominous vibe behind, in favor of Carl Craig-like warm synth builds and a steady rising feel. This references classic Detroit techno with a modern take - an epic track that throws up its biggest surprise with a second bassline half-way through that takes the track to another level. One of Jamie's best basslines in a career made of them. A harbinger of timeless things to come from Hot Natured.
Equilibrium - A chugging bassline underpins this track, which Hot Natured build upon with vocal snippets, sleazy struts and layers of synth sounds. The edgiest track of the three and the most nocturnal, a bit playful while containing a more dangerous, darker edge. ‘Equilibrium’s’ nagging synth sound will not leave any dancefloor unmoved.
Keys To The Garage – Fantastic use of percussion is the heart of this track. Hot Natured layer stripped down percussive and metallic sounds before introducing a sexy vocal and shimmering synth chords guaranteed to get hips and hands swaying. |

Great EP all round, Witnertime & Equilibrium are jams. Samples at the Culprit Myspace
