I love trees, but I hate LEDs

I know I'm supposed to be all about LED Christmas lights, but I hate them. They look like death. Im going to continue to buy incandescents until they figure out how to make LEDs look warm and inviting. Does this take me off the tree-hugger list?

I kinda like the fibre optic ones but the trees themselves aren't big enough. I want one of about 10ft for our lounge and the biggest I've seen is about 6ft.

no. Using technology doesn't equate tree hugger. Also it doesn't equate how your energy is produced. Most people don't live as ludites, if they did they might be spending xmas with Jesus.

If you'd like to conserve energy just try to share the beauty your warm bulbs with as many people as possible... and remember warm bulbs are more prone to fire if left on for extended periods, so be safe and don't leave your tree on if no one is there to take in its beauty.

Now cutting down a real christmas tree is probably extending the non treehugerness- however artificial trees are usually made of plastic - also not treehugerish.

There is the otpion of getting a house plan or decorating a tree outside and having a a "gift table" if you are going for gifts under the tree.

Maybe some fun wintery games outside with your friends and family, building a snow man next to the tree.

Then coming in for some hot cocoa.

When guests are over they can be invited in passing by the tree.

The housetree (indoor or outdoor) is the alternative to cutting a tree down or using an artificial tree. You could use candals instead but these require that much more care.

I think that it is great you are world conscience but it likely will not matter.
Due to massive projects that do more than the total of all humans involved.

For example CERN LHC 7TeV 1 million times hotter than the sun experiments -- planned to occur 1 million times. what is 1 million x 1 million times hotter than the sun in heat output, and how much is 1 million experiements at 7TeV?

What it comes down to is that it is your electric bill.

Doing good is good of course, like planting 10 trees for every tree you cut down for each year of the trees life. (example for a 50 year old tree plant 500 trees for a 5 year old tree plant 50. For 100 year old tree plant 5000.

What it comes down is to your pocket book.

buying a new set of lights will probably consume more energy than just using your old lights.

Actually if you have a tree farm and you're constantly cutting down trees and replacing them, you basically have a carbon absorption factory. Trees need CO2 to grow, and once trees reach maturity they stop absorbing more CO2 than they emit. The "plant mor treez" CO2 reduction theory only works if you then cut them down and plant new ones when they're done growing.

So there's a solid argument to going out and cutting down your own Christmas tree.
