THANKYOU
sorry i know thats alot to swallow!
i need to go home to practice...

first off.. the weight on the headshell.. is good to have. it helps tracking.
on the back of the tonearm, there should be a thread (like a screw thread) in the back of the tonearm... here you can install an extra (auxilary) weight - this should have come with your M3Ds - install it, so you can properly balance the cartridge with the extra weight on the headshell
so, you found the zero point. good. make sure when the marker is at zero, the arm freefloats fairly level to the platter.
I'm not familiar with the 500ALs and what thier tracking force is... but I usually run my carts at about 2 grams, seems to be plenty of force. just play around with it, find the point where it wont skip.. try to set the tracking force as light as possible but not so light that it skips or sounds bad. the less force, the less vinyl wear.
ok... so we'll assume you got that all set. next... put the needle on a record as if you were going to play it. change the height so the tonearm is as parallel with the record as possible (sitting flat)
next, you need to adjust the anti skating. dunno how most people do this, but here's how i do it...
get a one-sided record.. the non-pressed side of the record should be very smooth and shiney... drop the record on the platter with the smooth side up, start the record spinning at 45rpm and let the needle float on the shiny unpressed surface. the tonearm will tend to drift one way or the other (to the inside of outside of the record) ... use the antiskating control to "balance" the drift, so the needle will stay in the same position on the unpressed record... turning the antiskate one way will make the needle vere one direction, and vice versa... just get a balance so the needle doesnt drift over the smooth record and it should be good.............
